A Topper Jewelers Special Edition Inspired by Marine Life off the Coast of California
Zenith and Topper Jewelers announce the DEFY Extreme Diver “Bioluminescence” Topper Limited Edition, an exclusive interpretation of Zenith’s modern professional diver, produced in a strictly limited run of just 50 pieces. Drawing inspiration from the ethereal blue glow of deep-sea bioluminescence, specifically the luminous plankton found off the coast of Northern California, this edition brings a striking and atmospheric aesthetic to one of the manufacture’s most technically capable dive watches.
Topper Jewelers, the family-owned institution based in Burlingame, California, has spent three generations cultivating a reputation that extends far beyond that of a traditional retailer. Renowned for its close collaborations with leading watchmakers, Topper recently partnered with Doxa on a special edition of the SUB 250T GMT inspired by the California coastline, a theme that continues with this latest Zenith collaboration.
Encasing this aquatic light show is a 42.5mm titanium case, finished predominantly with satin brushing to emphasize the sharp, architectural lines of the DEFY design language. The subdued surface treatment absorbs light, allowing the polished chamfers to stand out with crisp contrast. At 15mm thick, the case asserts its presence with purpose, dimensions required to achieve the formidable water-resistance rating of 600 meters. This depth rating is not arbitrary: it serves as a deliberate numerical tribute to 1,969 feet, marking the year Zenith introduced the original DEFY diver.
The case architecture is a study in geometric complexity. A twelve-sided dodecagonal ring sits beneath the round unidirectional rotating bezel, a defining hallmark of the DEFY collection that distinguishes it from the abundance of conventional round dive watches. The oversized screw-down crown is protected by substantial titanium guards seamlessly integrated into the case flanks, safeguarding the movement from accidental impacts. Opposite the crown, a flush-mounted helium escape valve underscores the watch’s credentials as a true professional saturation diver.
The dial is rendered in a vivid shade of blue, animated by a wave-like pattern that comes alive under changing light conditions. Opting for a no-date configuration preserves the visual purity of the dial, allowing the textured surface to flow uninterrupted from center to minute track. Faceted, rhodium-plated hour markers catch and reflect light with a gem-like brilliance, contrasting sharply against the matte dial surface. The oversized minute hand prioritizes legibility, its generous application of luminous material ensuring that function always takes precedence, a fundamental requirement for any serious dive watch.

The central seconds hand features the Zenith star as a counterweight, a subtle yet evocative branding detail that completes a full orbit of the dial every minute. As it sweeps across the luminescent accents, it conjures the image of a vessel gliding through a star-lit ocean. A steeply angled flange ring adds depth while housing the minute track, keeping the main dial surface clean and balanced. At 12 o’clock, the “Zenith” and “El Primero” signatures are crisply printed, counterbalanced at 6 o’clock by the depth rating and “1969 Feet” inscription.
Powering this limited edition is the manufacture El Primero 3620 SC, the same high-frequency movement recently seen in the DEFY Skyline Skeleton Middle East Edition. The use of a 5 Hz (36,000 vibrations per hour) calibre in a three-hand dive watch remains a notable differentiator. Beyond the visual smoothness of the sweeping seconds hand, the higher frequency allows time to be divided into smaller increments, enhancing potential stability and precision. Despite the formidable 600-meter water resistance, the movement is visible through a sapphire exhibition caseback, an engineering feat rarely attempted at this depth rating.
The visual narrative continues on the reverse side, where the movement is fitted with a signature star-shaped winding rotor finished in the same electric blue as the dial. Skeletonized to reveal the escapement and gear train beneath, the rotor contrasts beautifully with the industrial finishing of the movement components, reinforcing the DEFY collection’s modern, high-tech identity. A power reserve of 60 hours ensures the watch can be left untouched over a weekend and picked up on Monday without missing a beat.
The watch is delivered with a comprehensive interchangeable strap system, including a titanium three-link bracelet with folding clasp, a white FKM rubber strap with Cordura-effect texture and ventilation, and an extra-long silver nylon strap made from recycled fishing nets, complete with dedicated end-pieces.
The Zenith DEFY Extreme Diver “Bioluminescence” Topper Limited Edition is limited to just 50 pieces worldwide. It is priced at USD 12,300, approximately AED 45,170.
