The Chinese Company Starts a New Chapter in Affordable Horology
At the 2021 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG), an unexpected surprise occurred when an emerging company won the “Challenge Watch” prize, dedicated to the best watch priced under 3,500 Swiss francs. The winning brand achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first company from outside the traditional watchmaking strongholds of Europe and Japan to claim this award. For the first time, a Chinese company won this prestigious prize. CIGA Design made history with its innovative Blue Planet watch, becoming the first Chinese brand to be honored at this esteemed event in Geneva.
Founded in 2016 by Zhang Jianmin, CIGA Design focuses on creating bold, contemporary watches at affordable prices. At the end of last year, we saw the brand’s special edition for the Chinese New Year, the Year of the Dragon. Now, with its first release of the year, the brand unveils its latest collection: the Z Hunter Skeleton, a skeleton watch with a tonneau-shaped case that showcases the brand’s craftsmanship.
The watch features a bold, angular, three-layered octagonal tonneau case crafted from 316L stainless steel, coated with a Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) finish for a matte aesthetic and enhanced scratch resistance.
Measuring 43 mm in length, 48 mm lug-to-lug, and 12.1 mm in thickness, the case is equipped with a sapphire crystal protecting the dial and a mineral glass case back. It offers a water resistance of 30 meters and weighs just 69.8 grams (without the bracelet) for optimal comfort.
CIGA Design offers the Z Series Hunter in three colorways: Classic Silver, Modern Carbon, and Minimalist Black. The skeletonized dial showcases a movement seemingly suspended between the front and back sapphire crystals, with crisscrossing bridges forming an X-shape. The hour, minute, and seconds hands are accented with green luminescent tips, complemented by luminous markers at 3, 9, and 12 o’clock.
Powering the watch is CIGA Design’s in-house CD-07 movement, developed exclusively for the Z Series Hunter. This fully skeletonized, symmetrical movement beats at 28,800 VpH (4 Hz) and offers a 40-hour power reserve and an accuracy of -15/+25 seconds per day.

The balance wheel is prominently displayed at 6 o’clock, while the branded mainspring barrel sits at 12 o’clock. The anchor-shaped rotor adds a distinctive finishing touch to the mechanical architecture.
Completing the timepiece is a DLC-coated stainless steel H-link bracelet with a quick-release system, along with colorful rubber strap options for added versatility. Priced at USD 389 approximately AED 1,430.
