Releases That Present One of Watchmaking’s Most Iconic Complications in a Distinctive Style
Originally developed for the precise demands of race timing, chronographs have evolved far beyond their trackside origins to become one of the most celebrated and versatile complications in watchmaking.
Designed to measure elapsed time, the chronograph complication has a rich and sometimes contested history. The first known chronograph was invented by French watchmaker Louis Moinet, a fact officially confirmed in 2013. Prior to this discovery, credit was traditionally attributed to Nicolas Mathieu Rieussec, who, in 1821, developed a chronograph at the request of King Louis XVIII of France to time horse races. Rieussec’s device became the first commercially marketed chronograph. Its true rise to prominence, however, came a century later with its integration into wristwatches, transforming the complication into a practical everyday instrument.
As 2025 a year marked by bold innovations and remarkable releases, draws to a close, the editorial team at Waqt has selected five standout chronographs that captured the attention of collectors and enthusiasts alike. These exceptional timepieces exemplify the perfect balance between heritage, technical excellence, and contemporary design.
Here are the Top Five Chronographs of 2025, as chosen by the Waqt editorial team.
Tudor introduces a striking new chapter in its Black Bay Chrono collection with the “Flamingo Blue” edition. The watch stands out thanks to its vibrant blue dial—an eye-catching shade unlike anything previously seen in the Tudor lineup—while the case design remains consistent with the robust aesthetic of the Black Bay family.

Despite its name, flamingos are, of course, not blue. Tudor explains that the color is inspired by the coastal environments where these iconic pink birds reside. While some enthusiasts have drawn parallels to Inter Miami’s third football kit, the brand has officially denied any such association.

Unveiled at Watches & Wonders 2025, Patek Philippe presented a new iteration of its Split-Second Chronograph, reference 5370R. This marks the first time the model has been crafted in rose gold, a significant evolution following the two earlier platinum versions with black and blue dials.

The dial, created on a rose gold base, features a rich brown tone achieved through the demanding Grand Feu enamel technique. Beige champlevé enamel is used for the subdials and tachymeter scale, with each enamelled surface meticulously polished to achieve exceptional depth and brilliance. Applied rose gold Breguet numerals complete the composition, while the 30-minute chronograph counter and small seconds subdial are symmetrically positioned at 3 and 9 o’clock.

One of the most talked-about chronographs of the year undoubtedly comes from Universal Genève, a brand whose long-anticipated return has stirred considerable excitement among collectors. The revival is being led with meticulous care, as confirmed by CEO Georges Kern, who shared insights into the brand’s future during our meeting.

The Tribute to Compax pays homage to one of Universal Genève’s most iconic chronograph designs, offering a compelling preview of what lies ahead for the reborn manufacture. The release is elevated by the use of Grand Feu enamel dials, a rarity in chronograph production. Each dial undergoes multiple firings at temperatures exceeding 800°C, resulting in exceptional depth, durability, and luminosity.

The collection is offered in four dial colors—white, black, brown, and blue, ach paired with contrasting enamel subdials that recall the legendary “panda” and “reverse panda” configurations.

The Monograph Pumpkyn represents a bold and vibrant evolution of Vyntage Horology’s signature chronograph line. Crafted from Grade 5 titanium, the watch combines lightweight construction with strong visual impact.

Its most striking feature is the orange sapphire dial, which reveals remarkable depth beneath polished silvered Eastern Arabic numerals. The silver hands are filled with Super-LumiNova C1 X1, emitting a green glow in low-light conditions. The dial layout remains balanced and legible, with a 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock and a small seconds subdial at 9 o’clock.

TAG Heuer adds a bold new aesthetic to the Carrera Chronograph with an eye-catching smoky black-to-purple gradient dial. This daring colorway builds on the success of the purple Monaco Chronograph introduced in 2022.

The sunray-brushed purple dial exudes a modern yet refined character, while the chronograph counters feature a full black azuré finish. Silver accents enhance legibility and provide sharp contrast against the rich gradient background, reinforcing the Carrera’s sporty yet sophisticated identity.
