Introducing The New Zenith Chronomaster Original Triple Calendar
Welcome to the hub of the horoloy
Boldness, and a lot of creativity in these engineering masterpieces
The majority of watches adhere to conventional hour and minute hands for timekeeping, yet a select few daring manufacturers leverage their technical expertise to explore novel, innovative, and sometimes outright audacious approaches to time indication and additional functions. In watchmaking, the essence lies in creativity, pushing the boundaries of how time is not only measured but experienced. Some watches go as far as personifying time or employing intricately complex mechanisms purely for our amusement.
Waqt has curated a selection of three outstanding watches introduced in 2023 that eschew traditional hands, presenting an astonishing array of unconventional displays.
These timepieces redefine the norms, showcasing the industry's commitment to breaking free from the traditional mold and embracing a more imaginative and avant-garde approach to timekeeping.
URWERK UR-120 Space Black
URWERK has made waves in the horological sphere with the introduction of this creation, the UR-120 Space Black. Designed by Martin Frei, this avant-garde timepiece transcends conventional notions of watchmaking, serving as an artistic expression that bridges generational gaps in the industry. The 44mm x 47mm x 15.8mm case, crafted from stainless steel and titanium with articulated lugs, ensures both wearability and style. Powering the watch is the automatic caliber UR-20.01, a complex mechanism offering a 48-hour power reserve.
Drawing inspiration from the Vulcan salute in Star Trek, the UR-120's satellite system presents numerals in a captivating manner, adding a science fiction touch to horology. Priced at CHF 110,000 which is equivalent to 450,000 AED, the UR-120 Space Black symbolizes URWERK's commitment to innovation, offering not just a timekeeping device but an immersive experience that pushes the boundaries of design and technology.
MB&F HM8 Mark 2
The watch captures all of Maximilian Bucer's passion for cars. With the HM8 Mark 2, Büser finally realizes his childhood ambition in the form of a watch that embodies the bold spirit of the automotive world. One of the great innovations in the HM8 Mark 2 is the use of Makrolon Carbon, a special composite material developed exclusively for MB&F.
The HM8 Mark 2 pays homage to the iconic designs of 1970s sports cars. With its speedometer-inspired time display, the watch's shape and double-curved sapphire crystal are an engineering feat in themselves. This masterpiece comes at a price of 68,000 Swiss francs, equivalent to 275,000 UAE dirhams.
Genus Rainbow Green
Genus Rainbow Green unveiled at the 6th Dubai Watch Week, Genus showcased a watch inspired by the UAE flag's green hues, achieved through the rare Damascus titanium and a meticulous anodic oxidation process. The 43mm case boasts a moiré effect, reflecting a vibrant 'Rainbow Green.' At its core, the Genus time-telling system features 12 gem "genera" orbiting sub-dials, providing a unique and visually striking way to indicate time.
This piece of art powered by the manual caliber 160W-1.2 movement, showcasing exquisite craftsmanship in Sébastien Billières Geneva workshops. Priced at CHF 224,350 which is equivalent to AED 914,000.
Exploring the realm of unconventional time display watches has been a fascinating journey into the intersection of functionality and creativity. These innovative timepieces challenge traditional norms, offering users a unique and personalized experience. From watches with unconventional dial layouts to those that play with asymmetry, the world of horology is witnessing a renaissance in design.
As the world of wristwatches continues to evolve, the infusion of bold designs and innovative ideas plays a crucial role in enhancing the overall appeal of these timepieces. However, achieving the uniqueness of each watch is not without its challenges, given the significant developments in the industry and materials science. Transforming ideas from paper to our wrists requires navigating the complexities of an advancing field, but it is precisely this dynamic environment that sparks creativity and ensures that each timepiece stands out amidst the ever-changing landscape.
