Introducing Voutilainen Unveils the Limited Edition 28MPR

Paying Tribute to the Iconic VINGT-8 Calibre as the Brand as the Brand Bids It Farewell

Embodying the Kari Voutilainen philosophy of precision, longevity, and innovation, deeply rooted in classical watchmaking, the VINGT-8 calibre and its distinctive escapement stand as a landmark in the workshop’s history. As of 31 December 2025, orders for this movement and its related models will close, marking the end of an era. Introduced in 2008, the VINGT-8 has since become an icon of independent watchmaking, admired for its rare balance of exceptional finishing, technical refinement, and profound respect for horological tradition.

Paying tribute to this legacy, the Voutilainen workshop unveils the new 28MPR, distinguished by a striking moonphase complication and housed in a newly developed 37.5 mm case. The timepiece is offered in three limited editions of 15 pieces each, available in stainless steel, titanium, and platinum.

The 28MPR is presented in a refined 37.5 mm case featuring a concave bezel and straight lugs, with an overall thickness of 12.6 mm. Through the sapphire case back, the movement is revealed in all its intricacy, meticulously finished to the highest standards by the expert artisans of the Voutilainen workshop, where precision and passion remain inseparable.

The dial showcases the extraordinary heritage of hand-guilloché, with each pattern engraved by hand with exceptional care and dexterity. Complementing this renowned craft, another remarkable métier d’art takes centre stage: the moonphase display. The lunar disc is adorned with blue Grand Feu enamel, upon which the moon is delicately hand-painted using enamel pigments. Crafted entirely in-house for the first time by the artisans of Brodbeck Guillochage, it represents a harmonious fusion of technical mastery and poetic artistry.

This ancestral savoir-faire involves applying multiple layers of finely ground enamel onto a gold base, each layer fired at temperatures between 800 and 900 °C to vitrify the enamel and achieve a deep, luminous colour. Following successive firings, the surface is hand-polished to attain a radiant finish. The result is a moonphase display of exceptional depth and translucency, requiring countless hours of painstaking work.

The 28MPR features an integrated mechanism that combines the power-reserve indicator with the moonphase complication, both adjustable by simply pressing the crown inwards. This elegant solution enhances the architecture of the movement while preserving the purity and harmony that have defined the VINGT-8 since its inception.

Introduced in 2008, the VINGT-8 calibre—here evolved into the calibre 28—remains a cornerstone of Voutilainen’s technical identity. Designed, fabricated, hand-finished, and assembled entirely within the workshop, the movement exemplifies the highest standards of precision and craftsmanship. It is equipped with a very large balance wheel, crafted in-house, enabling exceptionally fine regulation within strict tolerances, along with a rare and distinctive balance-spring system.

The 28MPR movement is further distinguished by its two escapement wheels, delivering a direct impulse to the balance via the roller jewel. This innovative construction requires less energy than a traditional Swiss lever escapement, resulting in enhanced efficiency, long-term stability, and an extended power reserve—clear benefits for everyday wear.

Visible through the sapphire case back, the calibre reveals outstanding finishing throughout. The pinions and wheels feature completely flat, polished surfaces with exceptionally uniform tolerances. The German-silver main plate and bridges are hand-decorated to achieve the highest levels of surface refinement, while screws and all steel components are individually polished by hand.

Offered in three limited editions of 15 pieces each in stainless steel, titanium, and platinum, the 28MPR is priced upon request. It is paired with an elegant, hand-sewn strap and can be further personalised to reflect the wishes of its owner, ensuring that each example remains truly unique.
