Introducing Venezianico Presents the Arsenale Sumie 墨絵

A Dial Showcasing the Art of Traditional Japanese Printing on Washi Paper

The Italian brand Venezianico once again pays tribute to the city of Venice and its deep-rooted connection with the Far East—particularly Japan—with the unveiling of the special edition Arsenale Sumi-e 墨絵, a timepiece that features an artistic dial crafted using traditional Japanese techniques.

Historically, Venice stood as one of the major gateways between Europe and the Far East. Venetian merchants traveled the Silk Road, exchanging spices, stories, and culture. With the launch of the Arsenale Sumi-e, Venezianico honors this legacy, merging Venetian heritage with the refined artistry of Japanese tradition. This limited edition watch places centuries-old craftsmanship at the heart of contemporary horology.

The 40mm stainless steel case, alternating between polished and satin-brushed surfaces, displays rigorous yet harmonious proportions. With a thickness of just 9.95mm, including the anti-reflective sapphire crystal, it frames the dial with understated elegance. On the caseback, Japanese characters stand out, identifying the technique that inspired this creation, surrounded by an engraved motif recalling ink dissolving in water.

The dial, a true masterpiece of micro-art, is made from Japanese Washi paper through a complex five-step pad-printing process that captures the delicacy of ink and its infinite nuances. Across this living, textured surface unfolds a poetic landscape, mountains and blooming branches reflected upon water, evoking the contemplative stillness of Sumi-e 墨絵, the ancient ink painting technique born within Japan’s Zen monasteries.

Reproducing the depth and sensitivity of Sumi-e on a dial just a few centimeters wide demanded absolute precision. Each layer of color is applied with millimetric accuracy, respecting the weave and natural imperfections of the Washi paper, ensuring that the final image retains the vibrancy of the original artwork. As in traditional Japanese painting, where there is no room for correction, each layer of ink here is definitive—the result of a perfect balance between technical mastery and artisanal sensitivity.

Powering the watch is the Miyota 9039 calibre, an automatic movement from the renowned Japanese manufacturer. This robust, entry-level movement offers a 42-hour power reserve and beats at a frequency of 28,800 vph (4 Hz). Favored by brands seeking slim proportions, it measures just 3.9mm in thickness, contributing to the Arsenale Sumi-e’s refined profile.

Completing the design is an integrated red rubber strap with stainless steel end links, adding a bold contemporary touch. The Venezianico Arsenale Sumi-e is limited to 500 pieces, priced at EUR 900, approximately AED 3,900.
