Merging art and environmental awareness: Ulysse Nardin's timepieces for the oceans
Ulysse Nardin, the swiss watch manufacturer with a deep affinity for the marine world, has unveiled its latest timepiece creations in celebration of World Oceans Day. The new releases, namely the Diver Net Azure and the Diver X Skeleton Azure, pay homage to the brand's commitment to both innovation and the preservation of the ocean environment. These high-tech watches combine striking design elements with responsible material sourcing, showcasing Ulysse Nardin's dedication to haute horlogerie excellence.
Ulysse Nardin's history is deeply intertwined with the marine realm, tracing back to 1846 when the brand produced its first marine chronometers. These timepieces played a crucial role in guiding the course of ships and safeguarding the lives of explorers. Today, as the ocean faces numerous environmental challenges, Ulysse Nardin has seized the opportunity to support the cause through collaborations with the NGO OCEARCH and shark activist Mike Coots. By leveraging their expertise in innovation and timekeeping, Ulysse Nardin aims to raise awareness and contribute to the sustainable management of environmental resources.
The Diver Net Azure stands as a testament to Ulysse Nardin's commitment to utilizing raw and recycled materials responsibly. Last year, the brand introduced the original Diver Net, a pioneering timepiece crafted from upcycled materials. The new Diver Net Azure builds upon this innovative foundation. Its case incorporates Carbonium®, a carbon composite with a significantly lower environmental impact than traditional alternatives, as well as Nylo®, a recycled polyamide sourced from fishing nets. Furthermore, 95% of the steel used in the watch is recycled, showcasing Ulysse Nardin's continuous efforts to improve sustainability. Powered by the iconic UN-118 movement, featuring a silicon balance-spring, escapement wheel, and anchor in DiamonSil, this fine watchmaking piece exhibits exceptional precision and durability. With a water resistance of up to 300 meters, the Diver Net Azure confidently embraces the ocean depths. The azure blue accents on the dial, display indications, bezel markings, and rubber strap serve as a vivid reminder of the watch's connection to the ocean.
In a display of technical prowess and distinctive aesthetics, Ulysse Nardin presents the Diver X Skeleton Azure. This exceptional timepiece revolutionizes the design of diving watches with its titanium DLC case, ensuring water resistance up to 200 meters. The dynamic skeletonized face, adorned with an X motif in deep black and azure blue, draws the observer's gaze deep into the intricate mechanical workings of the watch. Carbonium®, a lightweight and resilient technical composite, graces the barrel cover and unidirectional rotating bezel, providing a touch of avant-garde sophistication. The UN-372 Manufacture calibre, featuring an extra-large oscillator and a silicon escapement wheel, anchor, and balance-spring, underscores the watch's reliability and accuracy. Ulysse Nardin's expertise in utilizing silicon, which dates back to the revolutionary Freak timepiece introduced in 2001, ensures enhanced timekeeping precision, anti-magnetism, and resistance to oxidation and deformation. The integration of azure blue on the crown protector and rubber strap further emphasizes the Diver X Skeleton Azure's bold exploration of uncharted waters.
