Inspired by the Iconic Bird on a Rock Jewelry Collection Designed by Jean Schlumberger
Tiffany & Co., one of the largest manufacturers of luxury products, based in New York City, has in recent years begun to strengthen its position in the watch industry, driven by its acquisition by the French group LVMH in 2021 for a record amount estimated at $15.8 billion.
Tiffany & Co. has introduced its first Flying Tourbillon watch, which seamlessly blends the art of haute jewellery and haute horlogerie. Designers, craftspeople, and technical partners dedicated more than two years to designing and developing this exceptional timepiece, inspired by the Bird on a Rock jewels collection by French designer Jean Schlumberger, originally created for Tiffany in 1965.
Showcasing Tiffany & Co.’s legendary expertise with diamonds, the Bird on a Flying Tourbillon is set with a total of 848 diamonds, totaling 3.9 carats. The diamond-setting process alone exceeds 100 hours.
Presented in a 39 mm 18K white gold case, the watch features 340 round brilliant diamonds (more than 1.5 carats). The winding crown, inspired by the emblematic Tiffany Setting, features a prong-set solitaire diamond of 0.42 carats. The case offers water resistance up to 30 meters.
The high jewellery watch features a dial of natural turquoise, a diamond-set sub-dial displaying hours and minutes, a pair of diamond-set birds in flight, and a flying tourbillon mechanism all housed beneath a domed sapphire crystal.
The two birds on the dial are set with a total of 147 diamonds, while the sub-dial displaying the time is set with 168 diamonds (totaling 0.48 carats). Additionally, two decorative plates seen through the sapphire crystal caseback are set with 143 diamonds (totaling 0.55 carats).
The tourbillon cage rotates a full 360 degrees in 60 seconds. As a flying tourbillon, there is no bridge here; instead, the fixing point is concealed below the mechanism, leaving the mesmerizing action of the spinning tourbillon fully open to view.
The sapphire crystal caseback reveals the beauty of the flying tourbillon movement, hand-finished with various haute horlogerie techniques to add richness and contrast, including sandblasting, straight graining, satin finishing, and high polish. The gold-plated gear train contrasts with the cool, silvery tones of the other metals.
The movement, the Caliber AFT24T01, was developed by Tiffany & Co. in collaboration with the innovative Swiss haute horlogerie manufacture Artime and produced in the watchmaker’s workshops in the Swiss Jura. Comprising 205 components, the hand-wound movement offers a power reserve of 60 hours.
The two distinctive star-shaped bridges are inspired by the emblematic six-pronged Tiffany Setting, one for the flying tourbillon and the other corresponding to the hours and minutes subdial. Each of the six prongs is highly polished.
The watch comes with an alligator strap fastened with an 18K white gold T buckle set with 49 round brilliant diamonds (totaling 0.18 carats). The Bird on a Flying Tourbillon will be produced in a limited edition of 25 pieces, with the price available upon request.
