Two new additions to the Métiers d'Art collection celebrating the Chinese year of the Snake
Blending art with mechanical craftsmanship is not a new pursuit for Vacheron Constantin, as evidenced by the brand's iconic Métiers d'Art collection, which showcases exceptional artistic and artisanal techniques. Through this collection, Vacheron Constantin has meticulously crafted timepieces that tell a historical narrative, such as the story of the English ship, the Beagle, while also releasing masterpieces adorned with paintings by Van Gogh and Monet on the dial. More recently, the brand paid tribute to ancient Chinese culture, honoring its historic ties with China. Now, Vacheron Constantin unveils “The Legend of the Chinese Zodiac - Year of the Snake”, two timepieces to celebrate the upcoming (2025) Year of the Snake.
In Chinese culture, the snake symbolizes wisdom and is regarded as a mysterious creature associated with renewal and agility. As the sixth sign in the twelve-year Chinese zodiac, it is also believed to bring good luck and prosperity. On the dial of the two limited editions, the snake is depicted as a cobra, further emphasizing the historic bond between Chinese and Swiss cultures that dates back to the mid-19th century since Vacheron Constantin was instrumental in popularizing the jewelry watch among high dignitaries by producing elaborate "Chinese watches," richly adorned with engravings and enamels. Since then, the Maison has maintained its historic connection with China through various partnerships and the creation of timepieces inspired by Asian, and specifically Chinese, culture. These watches have become highly sought after by enthusiasts and collectors.
The two timepieces in this release are offered in distinct materials, one features a 950 platinum case, while the other is crafted from 18K pink gold. Both models share identical dimensions, with a 40mm diameter and a thickness of 12.72mm. A sapphire crystal protects the dial, and a transparent caseback reveals the movement within, allowing a glimpse into the watch’s mechanical craftsmanship.

The dials of these two limited editions are a testament to exceptional craftsmanship, brought to life by the combined talents of an engraver and enameller. At the center of the design is a cobra, elegantly unfurling its body on a rock, both sculpted with incredible precision by the master engraver. Crafted from pink or white gold appliques, the snake and rock took three days of meticulous work to perfect their texture. Miniature paint and patina add depth and character, with the pink gold version featuring an ochre-colored cobra and rock, while the platinum model showcases a sleek anthracite grey finish.
The dial’s four indicators seamlessly blend with the dial’s colors, showing the hours and minutes at 11 and 1 o’clock, while the jumping date and day are positioned at 5 and 7 o’clock. The decoration of the dial is the result of two impressive techniques. First, a gradient Grand Feu enamel creates the background, while the second technique, an ancient Geneva method, uses flux-coated miniature opaque enamel to bring the floral design to life. The master enameller applies enamel powder, layer by layer, to achieve the full spectrum of colors. The end result is a smooth gradient from the center to the edges, adorned with delicate foliage—ochre tones on the pink gold model, and lush green on the platinum edition.

Both watches are powered by the in-house Calibre 2460 G4, an automatic movement that operates at 28,800 vph (4Hz) and provides a 40-hour power reserve. Comprising 237 components, these timepieces are also certified with the prestigious Hallmark of Geneva, ensuring their exceptional quality and craftsmanship. The watches are paired with either a brown or blue alligator leather strap, complementing the dial and secured with a platinum or 18K pink gold folding clasp. Each is limited to 25 pieces and is available exclusively through Vacheron Constantin boutiques.
