The classic case houses a new caliber, offering an 8-day power reserve
Patek Philippe unveils the Calatrava 8-Day 5328G-001, featuring a newly developed manual-winding movement. While the watch retains the signature rounded Calatrava case, it adopts a more casual aesthetic reminiscent of the Travel Time editions. This function first made its way into Patek Philippe’s dress watch collection in 2015, marking a departure from the line’s traditionally slim and elegant timepieces, a transformation explored in our article on the history of the Calatrava.
The highlight of this new model is its impressive 8-day power reserve, as suggested by its name. Thanks to two series-coupled barrels, the movement delivers eight days of precise timekeeping, with an additional ninth day of power reserve indicated on the dial. This extra day ensures continued operation, though with reduced accuracy, signaled by the red zone on the power reserve indicator, reminding the wearer to rewind the watch.
Housed in a 41mm white gold case with a 10.52mm thickness, the watch features an elegant hobnail guilloché motif adorning the caseband, an intricate pattern of shimmering pyramidal shapes.
The blue dial showcases a matte-grained texture with a gradient effect, deepening to an almost midnight blue at the edges. The day function is displayed through an aperture inside the date sub-dial at 6 o’clock, with a hand indicating the date.
Both the day and date jump instantaneously at midnight. The small seconds is marked by a shorter hand within the same sub-dial, while the power reserve indicator is positioned at 12 o’clock, with the red segment corresponding to the ninth day as a reminder to wind the watch.
Applied white gold Arabic numerals, along with vintage syringe-style hour and minute hands, are treated with a luminescent coating, ensuring excellent legibility in low light.
At the heart of the Calatrava 5328G-001 is the newly developed manually wound Caliber 31-505 8J PS IRM CI J, which blends classic construction with modern technical innovations. Among these advancements is the Pulsomax® escapement in Silinvar®, which enhances efficiency and longevity. The twin series-coupled barrels ensure precise operation for eight full days, with the ninth-day reserve displayed in red on the dial-side indicator.
The timepiece is paired with an interchangeable blue calfskin strap, secured with a patented white gold triple-folding clasp, and is delivered with an additional grained taupe calfskin strap. Priced at CHF 60,000 which is equivalent approximately to 249,200 AED.
