Introducing The New & Improved MB&F LM Sequential Flyback in Platinum

The intricate chronograph is back with a new flyback function

MB&F is a renowned independent Swiss watchmaking brand, founded by Maximilian Büsser in 2005. Büsser's vision was to create a horological laboratory that blends art and traditional watchmaking, resulting in avant-garde timepieces that push the boundaries of design and engineering. The journey of MB&F was fraught with challenges and risks, as Büsser detailed in our podcast, but these bold steps ultimately paid off.

LM Sequential EVO

A well-known figure in MB&F’s journey is watchmaker Stephen McDonnell, the mastermind behind some of the brand’s most intricate timepieces. McDonnell played a crucial role in developing the LM Perpetual EVO and several other pieces. One of his standout contributions is the LM Sequential EVO, released in 2022, which marked MB&F's foray into chronographs. This model featured groundbreaking technical innovations, including the “Twinverter” binary switch, and won the prestigious GPHG ‘Aiguille d’Or’ award in 2022.

Continuing to push its boundaries, MB&F recently unveiled the LM Sequential with a flyback function, housed in a platinum case with a striking sky-blue dial. The case measures 44mm in diameter and 18.2mm in thickness, combining a mix of brushed and polished finishes. It includes four pushers to activate the two chronographs and a Twinverter pusher located at 9 o'clock. Additionally, the watch has a screw-down crown and sapphire crystal on both the front and back, complete with anti-reflective coating.

The watch is equipped with two column-wheel chronograph mechanisms linked to the same oscillator, allowing simultaneous activation. The revolutionary Twinverter switch enhances the complication's versatility by instantly toggling between different timing modes: independent timing, split-second, cumulative, and lap timer modes. Although McDonnell’s original prototype for the LM Sequential EVO included a flyback function, it was put on hold for additional testing. After two years of rigorous testing conducted in absolute secrecy, the LM Sequential Flyback is now ready.

The LM Sequential now features a flyback function, originally designed for pilots to eliminate the time-consuming stop, reset, and restart phases of a chronograph. This innovation addresses potential navigation errors by allowing us to do that with a single press. The first thing you notice on the dial is the balance wheel seated above the four chronograph counters with their white lacquered rings and blued hands. The watch displays elapsed times on four sub-dials: two 30-minute counters at 11 and 1 o’clock, and two larger 60-second counters at 9 and 3 o’clock. The right chronograph is operated using the start/stop pusher at 2 o’clock and the reset pusher at 4 o’clock, while the left chronograph functions similarly  but with pushers at 10 and 8 o’clock.

The fifth pusher, located at 9 o’clock, is the Twinverter, which controls both chronograph systems. Acting as a binary switch, the Twinverter inverts the current start/stop status of both chronographs, with that being said, if both are stopped, pressing this button starts them simultaneously, and if both are running, it stops them.

Unlike the previous LM Sequential EVO, the domed white lacquered time sub-dial at 6 o’clock is positioned above the twin chronograph counters, rather than beneath them. The watch is powered by an in-house movement made by Stephen McDonnell for MB&F. This hand-wound movement features two barrels and 619 components, operates at 21,600 vph (3Hz), and offers a 72-hour power reserve, and has a power reserve indicator located on the back with a blued hand.

The watch comes with a black alligator leather strap with white gold folding buckle, and it's limited to 33 pieces and priced at CHF 188,000, equivalent to AED 757,500.
