Honoring the Brazilian Formula One driver Ayrton Senna with an elegant timepiece
In 1988, TAG Heuer formed a partnership with Brazilian Formula One driver Ayrton Senna, one of the most celebrated figures in racing history. Senna’s career brought inspiration to the brand, leading to the release of numerous timepieces honoring his legacy. Tragically, this partnership came to an end on May 1, 1994, when Senna passed away following a crash during the San Marino Grand Prix at the Imola Circuit in Italy.
This year, TAG Heuer pays tribute to Senna’s legacy with the release of the Carrera Extreme Sport Chronograph Tourbillon X Senna, featuring a skeletonized dial with blue, green, and yellow highlights reminiscent of Senna’s iconic helmet that is inspired by the Brazilian flag.
Similar to the recently upgraded Carrera Collection, the new timepiece boasts a 44 mm grade 2 titanium case with a thickness of 15.1 mm and is fitted with a black forged carbon bezel featuring a tachymeter scale around the sapphire crystal. The watch also includes a sapphire crystal caseback, adorned with Senna’s “S” emblem and a light-gray stencil illustration of his eyes.
The skeletonized dial showcases black brushed bridges, highlighting the 30-minute chronograph counter at 3 o’clock, the tourbillon at 6 o’clock, and a 12-hour chronograph counter at 9 o’clock adorned with a yellow “S” logo. The hour and minute hands are coated with Super-LumiNova for enhanced visibility, while the chronograph hands are accented in yellow.
Powering the watch is the TH20-09 caliber, an in-house automatic column-wheel chronograph movement with a tourbillon. The movement operates at a frequency of 28,800 vph (4 Hz) and provides a 65-hour power reserve. The watch is fitted with a blue rubber strap and secured with a titanium folding clasp. It is limited to 500 pieces, and priced at USD 37,900, equivalent to AED 140,000.
