Introducing The Jaquet Droz Petite Heure Minute Red Gold Japanese Garden

A unique masterpiece with a stunning mother-of-pearl dial

Jaquet Droz has always spoken a language different from that of most watchmakers. While many brands measure progress through additional complications, the maison has chosen a path where time becomes a canvas for artistry. For centuries, the name has been linked to the decorative crafts, to enamel, engraving, and miniature sculpture, disciplines that transform a dial into a world of its own rather than a mere instrument.

The Petite Heure Minute collection embodies this philosophy. Its restrained display of hours and minutes leaves generous space for expression, allowing artisans to approach the dial as painters would a panel. In its latest release, the brand introduces the Red Gold Japanese Garden, a unique piece created for and alongside a collector, which elevates the art of mother-of-pearl engraving and carving to a new level.

The watch is housed in a red gold case measuring 41 mm. The architecture remains deliberately understated so that the eye is drawn immediately to the dial. The caseback reveals further hand engraving, reserved for the owner alone.

The dial is crafted entirely from ultra-white mother-of-pearl sourced from the Pacific. Onto this surface are applied twenty-five individual appliqués, most sculpted from the same material and finished by hand to within a tenth of a millimeter. The scene evokes a Japanese garden suspended in a moment of stillness. A temple stands at the top of the composition, its depth created through delicate layers of semi-translucent grey paint that recreate shadows and perspective with remarkable subtlety. Around it unfold reeds, water lilies, a cherry tree, and a lantern fashioned in yellow gold.

At the center of the dial, koi carp glide beneath the surface. Their eyes are set with minute diamonds that sparkle like reflections on moving water. The reed stems emerging near 5 o’clock measure only 0.1 millimeter in thickness. A mother-of-pearl cabochon positioned at the heart of the scene mirrors the river and its fish, its gently curved surface painted to reproduce the natural distortion of a reflection. Gold paillons scattered across the composition suggest floating leaves and pebbles.

Powering the piece is the Jaquet Droz manufacture Caliber 2653, an automatic movement operating at a frequency of 28,800 vph (4 Hz) and offering a power reserve of 68 hours. The mechanism incorporates a silicon balance spring to enhance stability and resistance to magnetic influence. A red gold rotor, decorated with a hand-painted mother-of-pearl inlay depicting a dragonfly above a flower, brings a final artistic touch to the movement. The caliber follows the brand’s traditional double-barrel architecture. The watch is presented as a unique piece created for a single collector. Price is upon request.
