A limited-edition platinum tribute to the first Swiss wristwatch in space
Among Breitling’s most iconic collections is the Navitimer, introduced in 1952 for aviators and later adopted by space explorers. In 1962, Breitling made history when astronaut Scott Carpenter (1925–2013) wore a custom Navitimer Cosmonaute during NASA’s Mercury-Atlas 7 mission, making it the first Swiss wristwatch to enter space. This year, to mark what would have been Carpenter’s 100th birthday, Breitling unveils a tribute rooted in both legacy and innovation.

The new Navitimer B02 Chronograph 41 Cosmonaute Scott Carpenter Centenary captures the essence of that pioneering spirit with a refined case crafted in platinum. Measuring 41mm in diameter and 13mm in thickness, the watch retains its tool-watch roots while exuding the gravitas of a precious metal. A cambered sapphire crystal, glareproofed on both sides, ensures excellent clarity, while a screwed platinum caseback with sapphire crystal reveals the movement within.
The blue dial contrasts with white chronograph counters, while Super-LumiNova coats the hour and minute hands for enhanced low-light readability. A 24-hour display, originally requested by Carpenter for space travel, remains a defining feature, accompanied by a date window at 6 o’clock. At the top of the dial, the historic AOPA winged logo nods to the Navitimer’s aviation heritage.

Powering the watch is the Breitling Manufacture Caliber B02, a manually wound movement deliberately chosen to mirror Carpenter’s original. It beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz) and delivers a 70-hour power reserve. This COSC-certified caliber features a column wheel and vertical clutch for precise chronograph engagement.
