The icon of square chronographs returns in a new case material
TAG Heuer has long stood at the nexus of motorsport, particularly with the Monaco watch, one of the first automatic chronographs, famously worn by Steve McQueen in the movie Le Mans. Now, the brand is introducing the TAG Heuer Monaco Split-Seconds Chronograph, featuring a proprietary case material called TH-Titanium, a textured, aerospace-grade titanium alloy developed entirely in-house.
The new watch is the result of a four-year material research project. TH-Titanium, typically reserved for aerospace turbines and high-performance automotive components, undergoes a proprietary thermal treatment developed by the TAG Heuer Institute. This process alters the metal at an atomic level, creating a naturally irregular, light-responsive texture.
The 41mm x 41mm square case boasts a sandblasted finish and is paired with a domed sapphire crystal and a full sapphire caseback. The crown and pushers are also crafted from titanium, and the watch offers 30 meters of water resistance.
The dial, made from sapphire as well, features black opaline counters, white Super-LumiNova indices, and a central split-seconds hand in vivid lime green. The same lime accent appears on the split-seconds pusher, located unconventionally at 9 o’clock, and throughout the chronograph subdials.
Powering the watch is the Calibre TH81-00, a rattrapante movement co-developed with Vaucher Manufacture Fleurier. Made entirely of titanium, the movement weighs just 30 grams and contributes to the timepiece’s overall weight of only 86 grams, including strap and clasp. It operates at 36,000 vph (5 Hz) and delivers a power reserve of 65 hours (55 hours with the chronograph activated).
The rotor, shaped like the TAG Heuer shield, appears to float in mid-air and is hand-painted with racing stripes. It is surrounded by dark DLC-coated titanium bridges, polished bevels, and a signature checkered flag motif.
The watch comes with a black calfskin leather strap featuring textile-like embossing and black-lime contrast stitching. The clasp is a titanium butterfly folding mechanism with fine adjustment for optimal fit and comfort. The watch is priced at CHF 145,000, approximately AED 647,000.
