Paying homage to the racing stopwatches of the 1960s and ’70s
TAG Heuer’s legacy is deeply rooted in speed, precision, and performance, and nowhere is that legacy more evident than in the Monaco collection. First introduced in 1969, the Monaco rewrote the rules of traditional watch design. Its square case, left-hand crown, and vibrant blue dial were unlike anything else on the market. It didn’t take long for the watch to become a pop-culture icon, especially after Steve McQueen famously wore it in Le Mans (1971). Over the decades, the Monaco has evolved, but its rebellious character and strong ties to motorsport have remained.
This year, the brand has expanded the collection with the Monaco Split-Seconds Chronograph in TH-Titanium, the Monaco Chronograph × Gulf, and, to top off the trio, TAG Heuer is launching the Monaco Chronograph Stopwatch. Timed to coincide with TAG Heuer becoming the first title partner of the Formula 1 Grand Prix de Monaco, this limited-edition timepiece pays homage to the racing stopwatches of the 1960s and ’70s while introducing modern enhancements.
Housed in a 39mm × 15mm square case crafted from black DLC-coated grade 2 titanium, the watch strikes a balance between historical homage and contemporary edge. The sandblasted case is topped with a domed sapphire crystal. The left-hand crown at 9 o’clock is a signature Monaco feature, while pushers at 2 and 4 o’clock control the chronograph functions. A sapphire caseback offers a clear view of the mechanical engine within, and the 100-meter water resistance ensures the watch is robust enough for everyday wear.
The dial draws inspiration from vintage Heuer stopwatches, combining a silver opaline base with a black circular layout. A red minute track along the perimeter adds a vivid racing touch, while white subdial hands and black opaline counters at 3 and 9 o’clock ensure legibility at a glance. Applied black-gold polished indices with red lacquer at 12 o’clock, black-gold facetted hands with blue Super-LumiNova, and a red-lacquered central chronograph hand complete the composition. A discreet angled date window sits at 6 o’clock, while heritage cues such as the vintage HEUER logo and “MONACO, AUTOMATIC, CHRONOGRAPH, SWISS MADE” text ground the design in its origins.
Inside ticks the legendary Calibre 11, an automatic movement operating at 28,800 vph (4 Hz) with a 40-hour power reserve. First introduced in the original Monaco of 1969, this modern iteration maintains its historical architecture and design ethos while delivering contemporary precision.
The watch is paired with a black perforated calfskin strap, reminiscent of classic racing gloves. It’s secured with a black DLC-coated titanium folding clasp featuring a double safety push-button and engraved HEUER logo, another nod to the past, refined for the present. Limited to 970 pieces, the watch is priced at CHF 9,600, approximately AED 43,000.
