Celebrating 'Mavericks of Time' with an Exclusive Tantalum and Onyx Masterpiece
Dubai-based brand Vyntage Horology is introducing a special edition of its Purity collection to celebrate the ‘Mavericks of Time’ exhibition taking place this week on November 9-10 in the heart of Dubai, at the iconic Museum of the Future, where big names in the fine watchmaking industry have come together to tell the story of the evolution of watchmaking over the centuries.
The latest release from the independent Emirati brand Purity Tantonyx takes its name from the materials used in the watch: tantalum and black onyx. Tantalum is a rare, dense, and corrosion-resistant metal with the chemical symbol Ta and atomic number 73. Tantalum is known for its exceptional resistance to corrosion, even in harsh conditions such as highly acidic environments, making it ideal for use in various industries. Now, it is making its way into the fine watchmaking industry as major brands have started to embrace its use, as seen at the opening of the ‘Mavericks of Time’ exhibition a few days ago in Abu Dhabi, where Greubel Forsey launched a masterpiece made of tantalum as well.
As the exhibition moves to Dubai, we explore new releases and designs, such as yesterday’s unique De Bethune watch that pays tribute to Dubai and is inspired by the famous Museum of the Future building that hosts the event. Now, Vyntage Horology astounds us with this limited edition that exudes the beauty of black and is exclusive, limited to only 24 pieces.
The watch is 39 mm in diameter and 10.8 mm thick, making it ideal for the wrist. What distinguishes this watch is its crown located at the four o’clock position. While the dial side is topped with a domed sapphire crystal, the case back is protected by a flat sapphire crystal.
The deep black dial is made of rare onyx, a difficult material to work with, while the famous seconds dial of the “Purity” collection is at seven o’clock. The dial does not show any indices, but rather makes way for the mystery of black onyx. The polished silver hands, designed in the shape of a mountain, stand out above the dark dial, and the hour and minute hands are coated with Super-LumiNova that glows green in low-light conditions.
Powered by a Swiss hand-wound movement that beats at 21,600 vibrations per hour (3 Hz), the Purity Tantonyx offers an impressive power reserve of 90 hours.
The Purity Tantonyx comes with two straps: a Jean Rousseau leather strap with exclusive turquoise lining and a matte black rubber strap with an engraved, polished, and finished tantalum buckle displaying the Vyntage logo. Limited to 24 pieces, the edition is priced at AED 79,500.
