Auction Phillips to Offer Rare Rolex Cosmograph Daytona “Die to Drive”

At The New York Watch Auction: XII, taking place on June 7–8, Phillips is set to present an exceptional selection of 144 lots, many of which are appearing publicly for the very first time. The lineup includes remarkable timepieces from both legacy brands and celebrated independent makers.

Among these standout pieces, Phillips will offer a historic Rolex Cosmograph “Big Red” Daytona Ref. 6265, once owned by French Formula One pioneer Jean-Pierre Jabouille. This iconic chronograph was part of Jabouille’s personal collection for nearly fifty years. Following his victorious performance at the 1979 French Grand Prix, Renault, marking its first-ever win in Formula One, gifted Jabouille a watch befitting such a monumental achievement. The timepiece was also a tribute to the first victory for a French car and racing team in F1 history. Engraved on the caseback is a powerful dedication from Renault: “DIE TO DRIVE – RENAULT F1 – J.P.J. 79.” It is estimated to fetch between $50,000 and $100,000.

Introduced in 1969, the reference 6265 replaced the first Oyster Cosmograph, reference 6240, and remained in production until 1987. It featured screw-down pushers—adding the “Oyster” designation to the dial—and improved water resistance. This specific example has a case dating to 1972 and is fitted with its original and highly sought-after ‘millerighe’ Mark I pushers. It is believed that the “Big Red” dial, appropriate for 1979, was installed on a “new old stock” watch at the time it was presented to Jabouille.

A true innovator, Jabouille played a pivotal role in transforming Formula One. The watch offered by Phillips reflects his fearless character and groundbreaking spirit, qualities that not only defined his career but helped shape the evolution of F1 technology. As shared in a heartfelt letter from his son, the consignor of the watch:

“I remember vividly the day he told me the story of this watch. It wasn’t just about winning; it was about daring to believe in something revolutionary, about refusing to accept limits. That spirit, ‘Die to Drive,’ is engraved on the case, but it’s also engraved in our family’s legacy.”

Jabouille participated in 50 Formula One races and secured two Grand Prix victories: France in 1979 and Austria in 1980. He later contributed to Peugeot’s endurance racing efforts until 1995 and went on to establish Jabouille-Bouresche Racing, where he remained actively involved until 2004.
