The intricate quadruple complication watch enters Patek’s regular catalog
This year, Patek Philippe introduces the Ref. 5308G-001, a white gold iteration of the platinum-cased limited edition unveiled at the 2023 Watch Art Grand Exhibition in Tokyo. Originally an exclusive piece, the Quadruple Complication now joins Patek Philippe’s regular catalog.
The 42mm white gold case commands attention with its bold yet refined presence, measuring 17.71 mm in thickness. A concave bezel and skeletonized lugs lend a contemporary touch, while every surface is meticulously hand-polished to Patek Philippe’s exacting standards. The watch features two interchangeable casebacks: a sapphire crystal exhibition window to showcase the movement’s intricacies or a solid white gold option. Though not water-resistant, the watch is engineered to withstand humidity and dust.
The minute repeater, activated via a slide at 9 o’clock, chimes on two gongs, while the chronograph is controlled by a pusher at 2 o’clock for starting, stopping, and resetting. A second pusher at 4 o’clock operates the split-seconds function (rattrapante), allowing for precise lap timing.
The sunburst ice-blue dial features applied white gold baton indices with blue accents and dauphine-style hands, ensuring legibility and elegance. The perpetual calendar displays day, date, and month through apertures arranged in an elegant arc between 10 and 2 o’clock, while the day/night indicator at 8 o’clock and a leap-year cycle at 4 o’clock. We can see the moonphase indicator at 6 o’clock integrated with the small seconds.
At its heart beats the automatic Caliber R CHR 27 PS QI, equipped with a platinum micro-rotor. This entirely redesigned movement achieves a 20% improvement in the minute repeater’s efficiency, while the integrated split-seconds mechanism adds just 1.93mm in thickness, making the total thickness 12.28 mm. To meet the energy demands of such complexity, Patek Philippe enhanced the torque of the barrel spring.
The instantaneous perpetual calendar is a technical marvel, with all displays snapping into place within 30 milliseconds. Thanks to two patented mechanisms, transitions remain seamless even when the power reserve dips as low as 10 hours. Depending on complication usage, the power reserve fluctuates between 38 - 48 hours, and the movement operates at a frequency of 21,600 vph (3Hz).
The watch is paired with a navy blue alligator leather strap, secured by a white gold triple-blade folding clasp for both comfort and security. Unlike its Tokyo-exclusive predecessor, the Ref. 5308G-001 now enters Patek Philippe’s regular catalog, priced at CHF 1,050,000, approximately AED 4,722,000.
