A compact 40 mm edition with a modern take on Panerai’s classic identity
Following the launch of the all-black Luminor GMT Ceramica PAM01460, the first 40 mm ceramic case in the iconic Luminor family. Panerai introduces the new Luminor GMT Ceramica PAM01783, a limited edition of 80 pieces available exclusively online. The model features avant-garde black aesthetics and a striking deep-blue dial within a 40 mm case. This marks only the second time the Maison has paired this versatile diameter with ceramic. The PAM01783 will be offered exclusively on panerai.com starting in November.
PAM01783 seamlessly blends Panerai’s functional heritage, evident in its signature design hallmarks such as the crown-protecting bridge, sandwich dial construction for enhanced luminosity, extended power reserve, and bold architectural forms, with the brand’s cutting-edge expertise in material innovation and practical daily complications. The inclusion of a GMT function allows for the simultaneous tracking of two time zones, underscoring the watch’s utility for frequent travellers.
The watch is housed in a 40 mm sandblasted ceramic case with a tactile, matte finish, contrasted by polished and sandblasted accents on the bezel and crown-protecting lever. The signature crown-protecting device is also crafted from ceramic. This advanced material offers feather-light comfort along with exceptional resistance to heat, corrosion, and scratches, qualities historically demanded by Panerai’s professional clientele. For structural integrity and visual depth, the caseback is executed in grade-5 titanium with a smoked sapphire crystal. Water resistance is rated to 300 metres.
Panerai’s iconic sandwich dial takes on a refined blue sun-brushed finish, delivering a crisp contrast between the blue surface and the luminous cutouts. The upper dial reveals the white Super-LumiNova X2 layer beneath, which also appears through the four small apertures of the running seconds counter at 9 o’clock. Designed as a traveller’s companion, the watch displays two time zones at a glance: home or reference time is indicated by a central 12-hour GMT hand with a white luminous arrow tip. All hands are finished in black with Super-LumiNova, and the date window features a colour-matched blue disc. Unlike the larger BiTempo (dual-time) models, the absence of a peripheral minute track contributes to a cleaner, more contemporary dial layout.
Powering the PAM01783 is the automatic P.900/GMT calibre, renowned for its reliability and three-day power reserve. Visible through the smoked sapphire crystal caseback, the movement balances functional depth with remarkably compact proportions, measuring 28.2 mm in diameter and just 5.20 mm thick. Energy is stored in a single barrel wound by a bidirectional oscillating weight. The balance wheel beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour, and the calibre is equipped with a stop-seconds mechanism for precise time setting. Its 12-hour GMT display echoes the Maison’s early 2000s dual-time models and represents a return to Panerai’s original interpretation of the complication.
The Luminor GMT Ceramica 40 mm comes fitted with a black calfskin strap and an additional blue rubber strap. Both are paired with a sandblasted titanium DLC trapezoidal buckle featuring the PAM Click Release System, allowing tool-free strap and buckle changes for effortless versatility across different styles and occasions.
