The first 40mm ceramic case for the iconic Luminor family
Panerai’s story begins in the Italian city of Florence in 1860, when it was founded as a workshop and school of watchmaking that supplied precision instruments to the Italian Navy and its elite diving corps. For decades, its creations were protected by military secrecy, with the Luminor and Radiomir watches only introduced to the public after Richemont acquired the brand in 1997.
The latest addition to the brand’s signature Luminor collection, the Luminor GMT Ceramica PAM01460, marks a significant milestone as the first-ever 40 mm Luminor crafted entirely from black ceramic. This debut brings Panerai’s high-tech expertise to a more versatile case size, resulting in a refined and modern aesthetic.
The watch features a sandblasted black ceramic case complemented by polished and satin-finished accents. A Grade 5 titanium screwed caseback with a smoked sapphire crystal reveals the movement within, while a domed sapphire crystal protects the dial on the front. The crown-protecting device, one of Panerai’s most recognizable design signatures, is also made of ceramic. Water resistance is rated at 300 meters.
The black sunray sandwich dial displays matte blackened hands and white Super-LumiNova X2 on its numerals, markers, and hands for enhanced legibility in low light. Staying true to Panerai’s functional aesthetic, the dial includes a small seconds counter at 9 o’clock, a date window at 3 o’clock, and an arrow-shaped 12-hour GMT hand for tracking a second time zone. The dial bears the inscription “BiTempo,” meaning “dual time” in Italian.
At its core lies the Calibre P.900/GMT (12H), an automatic movement developed at Panerai’s Neuchâtel manufacture. It beats at 28,800 vph (4 Hz) and offers a power reserve of 72 hours stored in a single barrel.
The watch is paired with a black calfskin leather strap secured by a DLC-coated titanium trapezoidal buckle, and it includes an additional black rubber strap. Both are fitted with the PAM Click Release System, allowing for quick, tool-free strap changes. The model joins the permanent collection, priced at USD 15,800 (approximately AED 58,000).
