A Limited Edition with a Burgundy Dial Featuring a Chinese Calendar Complication, a First for the Brand
Panerai ushers in the Chinese New Year with a striking addition to its Luminor collection, the Perpetual Calendar PAM01688. Showcasing a rich burgundy dial and adorned with Chinese characters on the calendar, this limited-edition timepiece marks a first for Panerai. The reference number, ending in the auspicious digits "88," symbolizes good fortune and prosperity in Chinese culture, reinforcing the watch’s celebratory spirit.
Breaking from tradition, Panerai’s Lunar New Year release steers clear of snake motifs, instead embracing the vibrant red and gold hues synonymous with the festivities. Panerai CEO Jean-Marc Pontroué highlights the significance of this release: “For the first time ever, we have personalized the dial with Chinese characters, embodying our commitment to crafting timepieces that resonate with our global audience, celebrating their unique heritage and values.”
The watch is crafted from Panerai’s proprietary Goldtech, a unique rose gold alloy with a high copper content and a touch of platinum, resulting in a richer red hue and enhanced resistance to fading. Measuring 44mm in diameter, it exudes a refined, classic aesthetic while retaining the hallmark features of the Luminor collection, with an added touch of luxury. Despite its elegance, the robust sapphire crystal protects both the dial and the case back, ensuring 50 meters of water resistance.
The distinctive sandwich dial comes in a burgundy sunray finish, featuring hours, minutes, and a GMT hand at its center. At 3 o’clock, a classic day-date display is positioned in Chinese language for the first time in panerai watches, while a multifunction subdial at 9 o’clock showcases small seconds and a 24-hour hand with a day/night indicator.
This, however, is just the beginning of the complications offered by the Luminor Perpetual Calendar. Through the exhibition caseback, additional functions are visible, including indicators for the year, leap year, months, and power reserve.
Powering the PAM01688 is the P.4100, an automatic movement developed over five years, allowing crown-only adjustments for the day, date, month, and leap year. The watch also incorporates a GMT complication with a 24-hour display, making it ideal for tracking multiple time zones. Despite its complexity, the movement is compact at just 35.1 mm in diameter and 7 mm thick. It features a gold micro-rotor and a double-barrel system, providing a 72-hour power reserve, which is especially beneficial for a power-intensive perpetual calendar with multiple precise functions.
Completing the look is a black alligator strap paired with a polished Goldtech buckle. The PAM01453 is limited edition to 100 pieces only, priced for USD 46,600 which is equivalent to 171,200 AED.
