The First Mechanical Watch with an Altimeter Function Returns in a Carbon Fiber Case
Oris is unveiling two bold novelties during Geneva Watch Days. The first is the Big Crown Calibre 113, boasting an impressive 10-day power reserve, and the second is the Oris × Bamford ProPilot Altimeter “Mission Control,” a reinterpretation of one of the brand’s greatest technical achievements, this time presented in a carbon fiber case with Bamford’s signature colorful touches.
Launched eleven years ago, the original Big Crown ProPilot Altimeter made headlines as the world’s first automatic watch with a mechanical altimeter complication. That pioneering model featured a hefty 47mm steel case, measuring 16.70mm thick with a substantial 55mm lug-to-lug. The new edition maintains that commanding presence while introducing a case developed in collaboration with 9T Labs, a spin-off of ETH Zürich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology). Crafted using a sustainable process, the carbon case showcases a unique, naturally patterned finish, complemented by a grey PVD-plated titanium bezel, caseback, and crowns.
For the case construction, Oris employed 9T Labs’ advanced “additive manufacturing and moulding” technique—an industrialized process distinct from 3D printing, designed to produce structural, end-use parts at high volumes. The material itself is a composite of carbon fiber and PEKK polymer, offering the lightness of plastic with the strength of certain metals. Highly resistant to heat, chemicals, and mechanical stress, it ensures remarkable durability without compromising on weight or stiffness.
The watch is equipped with two crowns: the main crown at 2 o’clock for time-setting, and an additional crown at 4 o’clock to activate, adjust, and deactivate the altimeter function. When fully screwed down, the altimeter is disengaged, preserving the watch’s 100-meter water resistance. The grey PVD-plated titanium caseback is screwed in and features a feet-to-meter conversion chart, a practical tool for users of the altimeter.
The black dial is accented with yellow, lime, and red highlights, including an altitude scale on the outer ring. Hands, indices, and numerals are coated in printed Super-LumiNova, while a discreet black date window sits at 3 o’clock. The yellow indicator tracks altitude on a scale up to 19,700 feet, while the red indicator corresponds to air pressure measurements.
Powering the watch is the Oris Caliber 793, an automatic movement based on the Sellita SW300-1. Measuring 25.60mm in diameter, it provides a 56-hour power reserve and operates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz), ensuring precision and reliability.
Completing the package is a black textile strap with a vibrant twist, the reverse side is lined with yellow and green leather. It is secured with a grey PVD-plated titanium folding clasp featuring a fine-adjustment system for optimal comfort.
The Oris × Bamford Watch Department ProPilot Altimeter “Mission Control” is limited to 250 pieces, priced at EUR 6,700 (approximately AED 28,800).
