Introducing Nivada Grenchen Unveils the Chronosport 38mm

An unreleased chronograph prototype from the 70s, now launched to the public

Nivada Grenchen has been a significant player in the Swiss watchmaking industry since its founding in 1926. However, the brand was revived in 2020 and reintroduced the F77 collectionDepthmasterSuper Antarctic & Antarctic Spider, and other models, aiming to reach a broader audience with its iconic designs. Now, the brand is set to unveil the Chronosport 38mm, an unreleased vintage chronograph prototype from the 1970s.

It began when Guillaume Laidet, the driving force behind the brand's revival and Chief Brand Officer, discovered an intriguing watch at an auction. This watch, reportedly one of only about 20 prototypes from the 1970s that never went into production, caught attention when he shared it on Instagram, sparking community reactions and demands for its comeback.

The watch features a stainless steel case with a brushed and polished finish, measuring 38mm in diameter and 15.7mm in thickness. It includes a double-domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating for enhanced clarity. The unidirectional rotating aluminum bezel is equipped with 60-minute and 12-hour scales that allows you to calculate a second time-zone. With a screwed crown and solid steel back, the timepiece ensures water resistance up to 200 meters.

The original watch's dial was crafted by Jean Singer, renowned for iconic designs like the Speedmaster Racing and the Heuer Skipper. The Chronosport blends elements from these timepieces with its own distinctive style. The black dial features two sub-dials, one at 9 o'clock for small seconds and another at 12 o'clock with a 30-minute counter, both in khaki. Additionally, the dial includes a date window at 3 o'clock, a tachymeter scale, and the option of white or yellow Super-LumiNova markers and hands.

Powering this watch is the automatic Valjoux-7750-ETA movement, which provides a 42-hour power reserve and operates at 28,800 vph (4Hz). The Chronosport 38mm comes in a steel bracelet with folding clasp or a selection of different straps in leather, fabric or rubber, and priced at CHF 1,960, which is equivalent to AED 8,000.
