Three new release inspired by Luna Rossa sailing team
Diving watches are a distinct category of watches designed to withstand the harshest conditions. Originally conceived to accompany divers during their underwater adventures, these watches have evolved into iconic symbols of precision engineering and rugged durability within horology. Their innovative design and features are tailored to meet the demanding requirements of underwater use. From water-resistant cases to luminous dials, rotating bezels for timing dives, and the Italian house Panerai highlights these features in its own way.
Panerai is renowned for its distinctive collaborations, and one notable partnership is with the America’s Cup, which commenced in 2017 when the brand was designated as an official partner of the prestigious sailing event. Two years later, it was announced that Panerai would serve as the title sponsor for “Luna Rossa” the italian sailing team. In line with this collaboration, Panerai has introduced several watches inspired by Luna Rossa. One of the notable releases was the Submersible Tourbillon GMT Luna Rossa Experience that was released during Watches and Wonders 2024. However, the brand didn't stop there, as it also introduced three new models inspired by the italian sailing team, the Submersible QuarantaQuattro Luna Rossa Ti-Ceramitech, in either white or blue dials, and the Submersible GMT Luna Rossa Titanio with a blue dial.
As mentioned in the press release, the new timepieces showcase a novel material named Ti-Ceramitech by the brand. Ti-Ceramitech represents a titanium alloy that has undergone a patented process utilizing Electrolytic Plasma Oxidation, resulting in the distinctive blue color of the case. This process transforms the surface of the titanium alloy into a ceramic layer, enhancing the material's hardness, making it 44% lighter than steel, and exhibiting a fracture toughness ten times greater than that of traditional ceramic. The name "quaranta quattro" is Italian for 44, indicating the case’s diameter. Additionally, the case features a unidirectional rotating Ti-Ceramitech bezel that surrounds Sapphire crystal and a screwed micro-sandblasted titanium case-back which ensures 500 meters of water resistance.
Although both models feature identical cases, they differ in their dial colors, one features a blue sun-brushed dial, whereas the other with a matte white grained dial. Both dials come with large skeletonized hands that are coated with Super-LumiNova, a date window positioned at 3 o’clock, and a small seconds indicator at 9 o’clock, with a combination of round and straight indices that are also coated with the same luminescent material.
Both variants are powered by the Caliber P.900, an automatic movement that offers 3-day power reserve, and operates at 28,800 vph (4Hz). The watches are paired with a rubber and blue textile strap with Luna Rossa red stripe, and a trapezoidal micro-sandblasted titanium pin buckle. Both watches share the price of AED 62,300.
The third release from Panerai is the Submersible GMT Luna Rossa Titanio, a GMT version that comes in a 42mm brushed titanium case with a matte blue ceramic bezel. The dial layout remains similar to the other releases, but the brand adds a GMT hand with a sail design tip in red and a 24-hour indicator on the dial flange.
The watch is powered by the caliber P.900/GMT24H, an Automatic movement that shares the specification of the Caliber P.900 but with a dual time zone function. The Submersible GMT Luna Rossa Titanio comes with the same strap, but with a lower price at AED 46,100.
