A Worldtimer in a darker and more elegant aesthetics
Ming has carved out a cult following among collectors since it was established in 2017. Founded by photographer and designer Ming Thein, the brand quickly made a name for itself with minimalist aesthetics, innovative mechanics, and a distinct visual language that blends contemporary flair with traditional craftsmanship. It collaborates closely with Swiss manufacture Schwarz-Etienne to create some of the finest crafted and finished movements.
In 2023, MING introduced the 29.01 Worldtimer, which we saw later in a beautiful Dubai Edition during DWW 2023. Now, the brand follows up with the new 29.01 Midnight. Taking cues from the noir-inspired palette of the earlier 37.09 Uni released this year, this new model dresses the Worldtimer complication in a darker, more refined aesthetic.
The 29.01 Midnight features a 40mm case crafted from Grade 5 titanium and finished with a durable black DLC coating. With a thickness of just 11.8mm, it strikes a balance between presence and wearability, aided by the brand’s signature flying blade lugs that flow dynamically into the case for a seamless profile. The lugs integrate with the caseback through a precision-machined interlocking groove, offering both architectural beauty and ergonomic comfort.
A deep box sapphire crystal covers the dial and simultaneously serves as the bezel, maintaining MING’s signature bezel-less aesthetic. Both the front and domed rear crystals feature double-sided anti-reflective coating, ensuring clarity from every angle. Water resistance is rated at 50 metres, offering protection for everyday wear.
Dark, layered, and luminous, the dial is built on a rotating metallic 24-hour disc set against a static two-level city ring, all enclosed within a sapphire crystal. Every detail, from the cities to the indices and hands, is filled with HyCeram ceramic Super-LumiNova X1, delivering exceptional legibility in low light. The dial also features a unique touch with orange luminous numerals.
Powering the watch is the Cal. ASE 222, an automatic movement developed by Schwarz-Etienne exclusively for MING. It uses a bidirectional microrotor system and offers an 86-hour power reserve, now enhanced with an organic, donut-inspired rotor shape mounted on ceramic ball bearings for improved efficiency.
The watch comes with a black FKM rubber strap, equipped with curved quick-release bars and a DLC-coated “flying blade” tuck buckle with micro-adjustment. Buyers also receive an additional strap of their choice. Limited to just 25 pieces, the 29.01 Midnight is priced at CHF 22,000, approximately AED 96,500, with deliveries expected to begin in June 2025.
