The Third and Final Chapter in the Moonphase Trilogy
Ming built its reputation through simple watches that display only the time, distinguished by their unique design language. Since its founding in 2014, the Malaysian brand has grown significantly and has recently shifted production to Switzerland. While focusing on creating simple timepieces, the company has also proven its ability to deliver more complex watches with its own distinctive touch, including chronographs, GMTs, world timers, and even divers, among other complications.
In 2021, Ming unveiled its first watch featuring both a date display and a moonphase indication, followed by a second release in 2023. Today, the third and final piece in this trilogy arrives: the Ming 37.05 Lunatic.
The Lunatic reimagines the moonphase in a bold and futuristic way, inspired by space travel. Both the moonphase and date indications are luminous, enhancing night-time legibility, while the watch itself draws subtle cues from the brand’s Minimalist collection. It is housed in the familiar 37-series stainless-steel case, sized at 38 × 11.9 mm with a 20 mm lug spacing, ensuring full compatibility with Ming’s straps and bracelets.
The sapphire dial is deceptively simple, partially transparent thanks to a specialized metallisation process that reveals glimpses of the movement, including the concealed sections of the date and moon discs.
The moonphase display is positioned in the upper half of the dial, while the hour markers, borrowed from the Minimalist, are filled with Ming’s signature Polar White luminous material. Depending on the light, the dial transforms dramatically, shifting from deep black to mirror-like silver, a characteristic “inversion” seen across Ming creations.
The hands, by contrast, are treated with blue-emitting Super-LumiNova X1, ensuring a striking visual interplay against the indices. Inside beats the caliber 288.M1, a manual-winding movement developed with Sellita. It features anthracite-coated bridges, rhodium-plated circular-brushed components, and openworked architecture. The movement runs at 28,800 vph (4 Hz), delivers a 40-hour power reserve, and allows quick adjustments for both the date and moonphase.
Completing the package, the 37.05 Lunatic is delivered on a white FKM rubber strap with a steel tuck buckle. Limited to just 100 pieces, it is priced at CHF 5,250, approximately AED 24,250.
