The dual chronograph with flyback function returns in a more sporty design
When MB&F unveiled the LM Sequential EVO in 2022, it fundamentally rewrote the rules of mechanical chronographs. Developed in collaboration with independent watchmaker Stephen McDonnell, the 585-component calibre was, in essence, a double chronograph. At its heart was the groundbreaking “Twinverter” binary switch, enabling an unprecedented range of timing modes, independent timing, split-seconds, lap timer, and cumulative timing, united within a single movement.
This hand-finished, dual column-wheel chronograph architecture also incorporated patented, internally jewelled vertical clutch shafts, delivering superior energy efficiency and precision compared to conventional chronograph systems. The industry took notice: the LM Sequential EVO was awarded the ultimate accolade in watchmaking, the GPHG Aiguille d’Or for Best Watch of the Year.
Yet for Stephen McDonnell, this was only the beginning. After two additional years of development—and the addition of several components, bringing the total to 621—the calibre was elevated even further with the introduction of flyback functionality on both chronographs. Initially reserved for two classic editions, this enhancement now makes its way into the EVO collection.
The new LM Sequential Flyback EVO combines this advanced flyback capability with the full suite of EVO features designed for an active lifestyle: 80 metres of water resistance, a screw-down crown, an integrated rubber strap, and MB&F’s proprietary FlexRing shock-absorption system. A notable addition completes the evolution—the signature MB&F tilted time display. Absent from the original EVO editions but present on the classic LM Sequential Flybacks for improved legibility, the inclined dial now makes its debut in the LM Sequential Flyback EVO.
Originally introduced in 2022, the LM Sequential EVO marked MB&F’s first chronograph and its 20th in-house calibre, distinguished by its technical ambition and the revolutionary Twinverter system. That same year, it secured the GPHG Aiguille d’Or, the most coveted prize in contemporary watchmaking. In 2024, the Sequential calibre appeared in the more traditional Legacy Machine case, enhanced with flyback functionality on both chronographs. Today, this feature joins the EVO family in the form of the LM Sequential Flyback EVO, presented in a grade 5 titanium case with an aquamarine dial plate and an inclined time display. As expected, it retains all EVO specifications, including 80 metres of water resistance and a screw-down crown.
The EVO treatment itself represents a series of design and engineering upgrades applied to select Legacy Machine references, transforming them into watches better suited for daily wear and dynamic use. Key elements include enhanced water resistance, a screw-down crown, an integrated rubber strap, and the FlexRing shock absorber, positioned between the case and movement to protect the mechanism during impact. Advanced materials such as titanium further reinforce durability and comfort. Visually, EVO models are defined by their ergonomic case architecture, seamless strap integration, and bezel-free construction, allowing an unobstructed view of the Super-LumiNova-enhanced displays beneath a domed sapphire crystal. The movements feature darkened finishes that underline the collection’s contemporary, sporty character.
The Grade 5 titaniul case of the MB&F Legacy Machine Sequential Flyback EVO measures 44mm in diameter, identical to the LM Perpetual, but is slightly thicker at 18.2mm. The case combines brushed and polished finishes, offering a refined aesthetic. It features four pushers to operate the dual chronographs, along with the innovative Twinverter pusher located at 9 o’clock. A screw-down crown and sapphire crystals on both the front and back, treated with anti-reflective coating, complete the case design.
The LM Sequential Flyback EVO retains the distinctive twin-chronograph layout of the original Sequential EVO. One chronograph displays seconds at 9 o’clock and minutes at 11 o’clock, while the other shows seconds at 3 o’clock and minutes at 1 o’clock. Each chronograph can be started, stopped, and reset entirely independently using the pushers on its respective side of the case. With the flyback function, the reset pushers also instantly restart the chronograph when it is running.
In total, four pushers manage the two chronograph mechanisms. A fifth pusher—the Twinverter—sits at 9 o’clock. Described by Stephen McDonnell as a “magic button,” it is the key that elevates the LM Sequential beyond any conventional chronograph wristwatch. Acting as a binary switch, it simultaneously inverts the running status of both chronographs: if both are stopped, they start together; if both are running, they stop; and if one is running while the other is stopped, their states are instantly reversed. This architecture unlocks a wide array of practical timing applications, unmatched in traditional chronograph design.
The dial features an aquamarine dial plate dominated by the V-shaped bridge arching over the large 14mm balance wheel, a hallmark of the Legacy Machine series. Hours and minutes are displayed at 6 o’clock on an inclined black galvanic sub-dial. The left chronograph indicates seconds at 9 o’clock and minutes at 11 o’clock, while the right chronograph mirrors this arrangement at 3 and 1 o’clock respectively. Both chronographs are equipped with flyback functionality. A power-reserve indicator is located on the case back. In total, elapsed time is read across four sub-dials: two 30-minute counters at 11 and 1 o’clock, and two larger 60-second counters at 9 and 3 o’clock.
Powering the watch is a hand-wound, in-house movement designed by Stephen McDonnell for MB&F. Comprising 621 components and fitted with twin barrels, it operates at 21,600 vibrations per hour (3Hz) and delivers a substantial 72-hour power reserve. Darkened NAC-finished bridges are hand-finished with Côtes de Genève, underscoring the calibre’s haute horlogerie credentials.
Two column-wheel chronograph mechanisms, synchronized to a single oscillator, allow simultaneous operation, while the Twinverter system enables instant switching between independent, split-second, cumulative, and lap-timer modes—now complemented by full flyback functionality.
Completing its sporty identity, the LM Sequential Flyback EVO is fitted with an integrated rubber strap secured by a titanium folding buckle. The watch is priced at CHF 168,000, equivalent to approximately AED 771,300.
