Introducing LVDB-03 Louis Varius, The Exceptional Sympathique Clock

Louis Vuitton and De Béthune Revive the Mechanical Sympathique Mechanism

Louis Vuitton and De Bethune join forces to unveil the third chapter in Louis Vuitton’s ongoing journey into independent watchmaking with the LVDB-03 Louis Varius project. Following previous collaborations with Rexhep Rexhepi and Kari Voutilainen, this new chapter deepens the dialogue between the Parisian maison and one of the most innovative minds in contemporary watchmaking.

The Louis Varius project was developed in close collaboration with master watchmaker Denis Flageollet, co-founder of De Bethune, bringing together two remarkable achievements: a rare and modern reinterpretation of the Sympathique clock one of the great masterpieces of 18th century horology and a unique execution of De Bethune’s iconic DB25 GMT Starry Varius wristwatch.

De Bethune has previously collaborated with independent watchmakers, though all such projects were conceived as unique pieces created exclusively for the Only Watch charity auction. These included collaborations with Urwerk, as well as with Kari Voutilainen, who partnered with De Bethune for the 2021 edition of the charity auction. Today, the brand returns with two new timepieces developed in collaboration with the French luxury group.

Jean Arnault commented: “In these collaborations, we give the watchmaker complete freedom to define their own vision of time, as well as their own interpretation of Louis Vuitton. We offer an external perspective that allows us to support independent watchmakers, while they, in turn, bring us their renewed vision of the Louis Vuitton maison. It is a dynamic relationship that generates a great deal of creativity and fresh ideas for both sides.”

The Sympathique concept was first introduced by Abraham Louis Breguet in 1795, designed to automatically synchronize a portable pocket watch with a more accurate master clock. We previously explained the operating principle and historical background of this mechanism in this article

At the time, this system represented a brilliant horological breakthrough, allowing the owner to place the pocket watch into the master clock overnight, where it would be wound and set automatically, ready for use the following morning. Only five Sympathique clocks were produced during Breguet’s lifetime, before his son later continued to develop the concept. Since then, this mechanism has continued to inspire generations of watchmakers not as nominal heirs, but as a true extension of Abraham Louis Breguet’s vision.

The Sympathique has long captivated the imagination of Denis Flageollet. In the early 1990s, nearly two centuries after Breguet’s original invention, Flageollet played a pivotal role in developing a modern interpretation of the concept for Breguet. That project transformed the historic pocket watch system into a wristwatch equipped with a tourbillon and a constant force remontoire, enhancing precision while preserving the founder’s spirit. More than thirty years later, Louis Vuitton and De Bethune revisit this challenge once again, reimagining the Sympathique as a balanced synthesis of continuity and innovation.

The design language draws directly from the iconic codes of Louis Vuitton’s Tambour collection. The minute track, inspired by the distinctive Tambour case profile, replaces the traditional “Louis Vuitton” signature with twelve hour markers, enhancing legibility while preserving the maison’s visual identity. Two triangular hands emerge from a central dial decorated with a Milky Way motif to indicate the hours and minutes.

The timepiece rests on a titanium base adorned with a blue meteorite inlay, mounted within a fixed cradle featuring an inclined locking system. The clock can be displayed in multiple positions, referencing the adjustable presentation of historical marine chronometers. In its reference position, the clock measures 310 mm in width, 266 mm in depth, and 260 mm in height, extending to 313 mm when tilted. While Denis Flageollet has never produced a traditional marine chronometer, the LVDB-03 Sympathique Louis Varius clearly reflects this heritage through its architectural construction and display. Notably, engraving work alone required approximately 900 hours.

The interface and docking mechanism—central to the Sympathique’s function—are discreetly concealed beneath a domed, engraved cover on the upper section of the clock. Crafted from pink gold, the dome is decorated with the constellation Hercules, a symbolic reference to the zodiac sign of Louis Vuitton’s founder. When the LVDB-03 GMT Louis Varius wristwatch is placed into the cradle, it connects to the master clock via the crown. Over a ten hour period, the system automatically winds the watch, while a dedicated mechanism located on the rear resets the time display every two hours to match the master clock, ensuring perfect synchronization between the two pieces.

This new interpretation represents the most advanced mechanical synchronization system to date, drawing not only on Denis Flageollet’s previous work but also on 23 years of De Bethune innovations in regulating systems and energy transmission. Remarkably, when regularly paired with the master clock, the LVDB-03 GMT Louis Varius wristwatch can be fully wound in a single night.

Innovation also extends to ease of use. Unlike previous Sympathique iterations, the LVDB-03 allows the wristwatch to be docked without removing the strap or performing any preparatory steps. The user simply unfastens the strap and places the watch directly into position, in a smooth and intuitive gesture.

At the heart of the LVDB-03 Sympathique Louis Varius beats the manually wound DB5006 calibre, wound via a key and entirely manufactured within De Bethune’s workshops. The movement comprises 763 components and is equipped with two large barrels and a remontoire d’égalité system, ensuring exceptional stability and precision. It operates at a frequency of 18,000 vibrations per hour (2.5 Hz) and delivers an impressive power reserve of 11 days.

Production of the LVDB-03 Sympathique Louis Varius is extremely limited. Only two complete sets will be produced, each comprising a monumental desk clock and a companion wristwatch, alongside ten additional wristwatches sold separately.
