A special edition commemorating watchmaker Hajime Asaoka’s 60th birthday
Kurono Tokyo operates under the independent Japanese watchmaker Hajime Asaoka and is known for infusing Japanese cultural elements into its designs, all while maintaining attainable price points. This year, the brand celebrates a significant milestone for Asaoka with the Jubilee Sensu EOL, a special edition commemorating his 60th birthday, traditionally recognized as the diamond jubilee in Japanese culture.
The watch features a 38mm polished stainless steel case, measuring 11.2mm in thickness with a lug-to-lug length of 45.6mm. A vintage-inspired, box-shaped sapphire crystal protects the dial, while the solid screw-down caseback ensures a modest water resistance of 50 meters. In a nod to this celebratory edition, a black onyx cabochon is set into the crown, a unique detail exclusive to this model.
The standout feature is its richly textured ice blue dial, rendered in a metallic tone known as Shiraai, a color Asaoka first introduced in 2021. The dial showcases dual stamped guilloché patterns: a chrysanthemum wave at the center and a stylized folding fan (Sensu) motif that functions as a power reserve indicator at 10 o’clock. A filet minute track encircles the dial, while black Kanji script (taken from Chinese script and used in the writing of Japanese) marks the hours alongside domed steel indices. Polished, hand-bent steel hands complete the look.
Powering the watch is the Miyota 9133, an automatic movement that succeeds last year’s Sensu NOS model, which used a now-unavailable new-old-stock calibre. This time, Kurono Tokyo utilizes the discontinued Miyota Cal. 9133, an end-of-life movement no longer in production. A limited quantity was secured, with no possibility of replenishment. To further elevate the design, Asaoka removed the date display, enhancing both visual clarity and the exclusivity of this rare calibre. It beats at 28,800 vph (4 Hz) and offers a 40-hour power reserve.
The watch is paired with a black calfskin leather strap, tapering from 20mm to 16mm, and fastened with a polished steel pin buckle. Production will be strictly limited, though exact numbers have not been disclosed. Previews and pre-orders begin on May 15 at Kurono Tokyo boutiques in Aoyama and Shanghai. Global online orders open on May 22 at 11:00 AM (6:00 AM Dubai time) and 11:00 PM (6:00 PM Dubai time) Japan time. The Kurono Tokyo 2025 Jubilee Sensu EOL is priced at USD 2,230, approximately AED 8,200.
