A Smiling Panda Face on the Dial Redefines The Way Time is Displayed
Konstantin Chaykin watches are renowned for their innovative and unconventional designs, focusing on unique shapes like human faces or animals, which add an artistic and aesthetic flair to each piece. These timepieces seamlessly blend artistic elements with intricate mechanical engineering, showcasing complex movements that create visual changes over time, giving the watches a dynamic and ever-evolving character. One of the most iconic creations in this line is the "Joker watch”, which displays the changing face of the Joker character, using rotating cylinders to indicate the time instead of traditional hands, offering another innovative touch to the design. In this way, Konstantin Chaykin's watches combine traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology, making each watch a unique work of art. Today, we are excited to explore the latest creation from the Russian watchmaker, the 'Panda Unique' watch from the 'West Mons' animal collection. The concept for this distinctive timepiece was conceived in the summer of 2018.
The watch is housed in a sturdy case crafted from stainless steel and black carbon fiber. It has a diameter of 40 mm and a thickness of 12.2 mm (12.55 mm including the lugs). The six-screw exhibition caseback, made of sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating, reveals the fine craftsmanship of the movement. The design also features uniquely crafted lugs: the lower lugs follow the distinctive conical shape of the Wristmons collection, while the upper lugs, made of black carbon fiber, are shaped to resemble panda ears. The crown at 6 o’clock further enhances the watch’s distinctive aesthetic, as does the word "Panda" engraved on the bezel, with scattered letters distributed across its surface. The panda face is protected by a sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating, ensuring both clarity and durability while safeguarding the intricate details of the dial.
The Panda dial is a true work of art, presenting time in a strikingly unconventional way. It features a combination of finishes, including sandblasted, wavy guilloché pattern, polishing, brushing, and multi-layer lacquer, with rhodium and ruthenium plating. These techniques create a dynamic, textured surface that catches the light from every angle. Time is displayed via two moving discs: the left panda eye indicates the hours at 10 o’clock, while the right panda eye shows the minutes at 2 o’clock, flanked by white-printed indices for easy reading. At 6 o’clock, the moon phase complication is uniquely represented by the panda’s smiling mouth and its moving red tongue, adding an element of whimsy and sophistication to the design. Additionally, the brand’s logo is discreetly placed on the panda’s forehead, adding a distinctive touch to the overall aesthetic of the watch. This imaginative approach to timekeeping perfectly embodies the playful yet refined spirit of the Panda.
The watch is powered by the La Joux-Perret G200 automatic movement, featuring a special rotor design. This caliber, modified by the Konstantin Chaykin manufacturer, integrates a Joker indication module, showcasing the brand's expertise in innovative complications. The movement operates with a Swiss lever escapement and a balance frequency of 28,800 vph (4Hz), ensuring precise timekeeping. With a robust power reserve of 68 hours and a total of 85 module parts, the G200 offers exceptional performance and reliability.
This timepiece comes with a Black alligator leather with black calfskin lining, and stainless steel pin buckle.
