The reversed movement integrated into a cushion-shaped case
Kari Voutilainen unveils the Voutilainen KV20i Reversed CS, CS standing for cushion shape, a case design often seen in many of the independent watchmaker’s masterpieces. This cushion form is inspired by the pocket watch TP1, created in 2019 by Kari and Venla Voutilainen for the Only Watch charity auction.
The watch is equipped with a new in-house calibre featuring a unique “back-to-front” construction. The movement has been reversed, allowing one to admire its beauty and technical mastery from the front, while still reading the time. With its contemporary aesthetic, the KV20i Reversed CS distinguishes itself through an elegant cherry-colored minute circle and, of course, the signature touch of hand-guilloché, a hallmark seen in Voutilainen’s own creations as well as in other brands, thanks to his dial-making company Comblémine, which supplies finely crafted guilloché dials to many maisons.
The timepiece is housed in a 39 mm cushion-shaped case, reminiscent of the Cushion Shape Worldtime, crafted from titanium with a light satin finish and polished accents. The case is distinguished by four screws at the corners. For optimal wrist comfort, the short and curved lugs ensure an excellent fit, while sapphire crystal protects the watch on both sides.
The openworked dial, reminiscent of the earlier KV20i Reversed, reveals the intricate components of the movement, with the time display split between the front and the caseback. On the front, a cherry-colored minute circle surrounds the movement, accented by polished gold quarter dots, with the large balance wheel prominently positioned at 12 o’clock. On the reverse, the caseback showcases a cherry-colored hand-guilloché dial with a small seconds counter. The hands, crafted from gold and blued steel, enhance the refined aesthetic.
Powering the watch is the new Voutilainen manual-winding calibre KV20i, featuring two escapement wheels that deliver a direct impulse to the balance via the roller jewel. The oversized balance wheel, measuring 13.50 mm in diameter, beats at 18,000 vph (2.5 Hz) and provides a robust 60-hour power reserve from a single barrel. The main plate and bridges, crafted from German silver, are meticulously hand-decorated to achieve the highest levels of surface finishing. Screws and all steel components are likewise polished and finished entirely by hand.
The Voutilainen KV20i Reversed CS is completed with a hand-sewn brown crocodile leather strap. It is priced at CHF 133,800, equivalent to approximately 617,000 AED.
