The brand’s iconic chronograph makes its debut in a striking all-black execution
IWC Schaffhausen unveils the Portugieser Chronograph Ceratanium. The iconic chronograph is now presented in a striking all-black execution crafted from Ceratanium, an IWC-developed material that combines lightness and hardness with a distinctive dark metallic finish. Alongside the Ceratanium case, crown, and pushers, the watch features a black dial with black appliqués and hands, paired with a rubber strap in the same shade. The Portugieser Chronograph Ceratanium is released in a limited edition of 1,500 pieces.
Since its introduction in 1998, the Portugieser Chronograph has brought a touch of sporty elegance to IWC Schaffhausen’s Portugieser collection. With its two vertically aligned subdials and inner flange featuring a quarter-second scale, it has become one of the brand’s most recognizable designs. IWC now presents a bold reinterpretation of this timeless classic: the first all-black version crafted entirely from Ceratanium.
The watch features a 41 mm case, crown, and pushers made from Ceratanium. Developed by IWC, this advanced material combines the lightness and structural integrity of titanium with a hardness and scratch resistance comparable to ceramic. Based on a proprietary titanium alloy and fired at high temperatures in a kiln, Ceratanium acquires its distinctive dark, metallic finish through a complex manufacturing process.
The monochromatic aesthetic is reinforced by a black dial accented with black appliqués and hands. The applied Arabic numerals, indices, and quarter-second scale appear as subtle elevations against the matte black background, creating depth while maintaining a cohesive design language. The signature vertical layout of the subdials remains intact, with a 30-minute counter at 12 o’clock and a running seconds display at 6 o’clock. Both subdials are enhanced with a refined snailed finish.
Visible through the transparent sapphire case back is the IWC-manufactured Calibre 69355. This chronograph movement, featuring a traditional column-wheel architecture, comprises 205 individual components. Its bi-directional pawl winding system efficiently builds a power reserve of 46 hours. The movement beats at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz).
Limited to 1,500 pieces, the Portugieser Chronograph Ceratanium is fitted with a black rubber strap featuring a square pattern that complements the watch’s monolithic aesthetic. It is priced at EUR 15,000, approximately AED 65,000.
