Introducing IWC Expands the Ingenieur Automatic 40 with a New Blue Dial

IWC is widely known for its iconic pilot’s watches, engineered for aviation professionals and crafted with precision to withstand the demanding environment of flight. Yet, the brand’s foray into new uncharted waters in 1955 with the Ingenieur, a timepiece designed as the first antimagnetic wristwatch from the brand for civilian use.

However, it wasn’t until the 1970s, when legendary designer Gérald Genta redesign the Ingenieur, welcoming it into the luxury sport world. Genta’s Ingenieur SL (Reference 1832) introduced an innovative concept, a stainless steel luxury sports watch with an integrated bracelet. This iconic model set the stage for the Ingenieur to become a iconic symbol of both elegance and technical prowess.

Fast forward to 2023, and IWC revisited the spirit of Genta’s vision with the release of the Ingenieur Automatic 40. Initially available in titanium and stainless steel, featuring a variety of dial colors including black, silver, and aqua, IWC now adds a striking blue dial to the collection. 

The case is crafted from stainless steel, measuring 40mm in diameter and 10.8mm in thickness. The distinctive round bezel is securely screwed onto the case ring with five polygonal screws. Both the case and bracelet are finished with a mix of brushed and polished surfaces to create a sophisticated, balanced look. The watch features a sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating on the dial side, and a screwed steel case back. 

The signature grid pattern on the dial, composed of fine lines and squares, is embossed onto the soft iron base through high-pressure stamping. A blue hue is then applied using a PVD coating. The dial also features a date window at 3 o'clock, along with rhodium-plated hands and applied indices, all filled with Super-LumiNova to enhance readability in low-light conditions.

The watch is powered by the IWC-manufactured Calibre 32111, an automatic movement that operates at a frequency of 28,800 vph (4Hz) and provides a reliable power reserve of 120 hours (5 days). The movement is also protected by a soft-iron inner case, which shields it from the influence of magnetic fields, ensuring consistent accuracy. The Ingenieur Automatic 40 joins the permanent collection at a price of CHF 12,000, which is approximately AED 50,000.
