A Distinctive Dial Inspired by the Snow Covered Forests of Japan
Since its founding in 1960, Grand Seiko has stood at the intersection of precision craftsmanship, minimalist aesthetics, and the Japanese appreciation for natural beauty. Among its most defining achievements is the creation of the Evolution 9 Collection, a design philosophy introduced in 2020 that reimagines Grand Seiko’s legacy for a new generation. Drawing from the foundational grammar of the 1967 44GS, Evolution 9 refines the brand’s signature codes with enhanced legibility, presence, and comfort. Each timepiece in the collection reflects Grand Seiko’s ongoing dialogue with nature expressed not through literal interpretation, but through texture, light, and atmosphere.
One of the latest additions to this evolving lineage is the “Evolution 9 Spring Drive U.F.A SLGB005“, a new release announced by the brand. This timepiece is inspired by the ephemeral moment when dawn breaks over the frost-covered forests of Shinshu, capturing a subtle violet glow that emerges as first light touches the ice-laden trees.
The case is crafted from Ever-Brilliant Steel, an advanced alloy with a PREN rating exceeding 40 offering superior corrosion resistance and a brighter luster compared to conventional stainless steel. Measuring 37mm in diameter and 11.4mm in thickness with a low center of gravity, the case is designed for optimal balance and all-day comfort on the wrist. True to the Evolution 9 design philosophy, the finishing blends Zaratsu-polished mirror surfaces with finely brushed textures, creating a dynamic interplay of light and shadow. A box-shaped sapphire crystal enhances clarity, while the see-through screw-down case back offers a subtle artistic touch revealing a movement inspired by the crystalline frost of a Shinshu winter, where jewels shimmer like stars above the Kirigamine Highlands.
The dial captures a fleeting natural spectacle the moment dawn breaks over frost-covered forests in Shinshu. Its deep violet hue subtly radiates from the outer edge toward the center, evoking the early light as it gradually reveals the frozen landscape. The texture is intricately detailed, resembling the delicate crystalline patterns formed by ice, and shifts with the angle of light in a way that brings the dial to life. A white-printed minute track encircles the outer edge for enhanced legibility, while applied silver indices add depth and refinement. A discreet date window positioned at 3 o’clock provides practical functionality without disrupting the dial’s balanced composition.
The watch is powered by the Spring Drive Caliber 9RB2, an automatic movement that exemplifies Grand Seiko’s fusion of mechanical artistry and quartz-level precision. Engineered for long-lasting performance, it offers a power reserve of approximately 72 hours and includes a power reserve indicator for added functionality. Its hallmark, however, is its accuracy rated at ±20 seconds per year made possible through the integration of a glide wheel and a quartz regulator.
It comes with Ever-Brilliant Steel 3-link bracelet with three-fold clasp with push-button release in Ever-Brilliant Steel, and titanium parts and 18k rose gold. This watch is a limited edition of 1,300 pieces, and priced at EUR 11,000, which is equivalent to AED 47,500 approximately.
