Introducing Girard-Perregaux Unveils the Cosmos Unique Piece

Reviving a technical milestone, a design that integrates astronomy into haute horlogerie

First released in 2019, the Cosmos perfectly showcases Girard-Perregaux’s horological mastery. Featuring three exceptional complications, the model exemplifies technical virtuosity, impeccable finishing, and artisanal craftsmanship. Initially, Girard-Perregaux offered three versions of this watch in aventurine, obsidian, and onyx, as well as a combination of spectrolite and aventurine. Later, the Cosmos Infinity, limited to eight pieces, highlighted black onyx.

Now, Girard-Perregaux unveils a new unique piece that reaffirms its commitment to refinement. The new Bridges Cosmos Unique Piece retains the same construction, complications, and movement as its predecessor.

The watch is presented in a titanium case measuring 47 mm in diameter and 22.20 mm in thickness, paired with a sapphire anti-reflective “box” glass and a sapphire crystal case-back. It is water-resistant to 30 meters (3 ATM). It features three complications, including a tourbillon, complemented by two rotating globes displaying sidereal and civil time—a miniature planetarium.

At the base of the dial, the tourbillon is housed in a lyre-shaped cage, supported by Girard-Perregaux’s signature aerial Neo Bridge—a modern reinterpretation of Constant-Girard’s 19th-century arrow-shaped bridge—crafted here in titanium.

Replacing a conventional crown, the watch employs four rotating bows, or “bélières,” located on the back for winding and setting. Each function is identified by a symbol: an hourglass for the time, an Earth for the terrestrial globe, and stars with a moon for the celestial globe. Luminescent treatment ensures visibility in the dark.

The semi-circular sapphire case-back is shaped to accommodate the winding bow seamlessly. In contrast, the front features a sapphire “box” crystal, providing an expansive view of the movement and enhancing its three-dimensional depth. Crafting this domed crystal requires approximately 4.5 times more material than a conventional flat sapphire case-back.

In line with the Bridges collection’s design ethos, visual symmetry is maximized. The dial assigns each cardinal point to a specific function or complication, while the case-back maintains perfect left–right balance, emphasized by the absence of a crown.

Complementing the tourbillon, the watch features two additional complications: a terrestrial globe and a celestial globe. Positioned at 3 o’clock, the terrestrial globe indicates day and night—day visible on the dial side, night on the case-back side. Completing a full rotation in 24 hours, it is surrounded by an hour ring inspired by Saturn’s rings. Opposite, at 9 o’clock, the celestial globe displays the constellations of the Zodiac, completing a rotation in 23 hours, 56 minutes, and 4 seconds, corresponding to a sidereal day.

The dial evokes a cosmic universe, made of Tahitian mother-of-pearl topped with blue aventurine. The aventurine layer is thin enough to allow the iridescent reflections of the mother-of-pearl to shine through. The contrast between deep iridescent hues and sparkling aventurine creates captivating plays of light, harmonizing seamlessly with the blue globes.

At the top of the dial, an off-centered black time counter displays hours and minutes across a black sandblasted core, surrounded by a sunray-finished outer ring. Polished white-gold hour markers and white-gold hands treated with luminescent material, along with a minute track marked by twelve luminescent blocks, ensure excellent readability in low light.

Powering the watch is the hand-wound calibre GP09320, used in the 2019 Cosmos. It comprises 368 components, including 52 jewels, beats at 21,600 vibrations per hour, and delivers a 57-hour power reserve. The movement is finished to haute horlogerie standards, featuring sandblasted titanium bridges with hand-bevelled edges, a circular-grained mainplate, and black-polished screws.

The Cosmos is presented on an anthracite calfskin strap with a nubuck finish, hand-stitching, and a titanium triple-folding clasp. This Girard-Perregaux Cosmos is a unique piece, with price available upon request.
