A Masterpiece of Gem-Setting and Triple-Axis Tourbillon, Celebrating the Hong Kong Boutique Opening
Franck Muller unveiled the Vanguard Revolution 3 Skeleton Ruby, a “one and only” execution that amplifies the mechanical prowess of the movement through a visually arresting exterior. This unique timepiece was presented to mark a significant milestone in the brand’s Asian expansion, coinciding with the opening of a new boutique at Hong Kong’s prestigious IFC Mall. It stands as a singular creation that unites the high-concept engineering of the self-proclaimed Master of Complications with the opulent artistry of high jewellery setting.
The immediate visual impact is one of intense, saturation-rich colour. The case is not merely accented with precious stones; it is entirely armoured in them, forming a seamless façade of deep crimson that interacts dramatically with light.
The case retains the celebrated Vanguard silhouette, now synonymous with Franck Muller’s contemporary identity. Its tonneau shape is amplified by pronounced curvature and muscular volume. The dimensions are unapologetically bold, measuring 46 mm in width, 55.9 mm in length, and 16 mm in thickness.
Rhodium plating applied to the white gold case ensures a brilliant finish that visually disappears beneath the rubies, enhancing the “floating” effect of the gemstones. Black inserts along the flanks add a sporty, aggressive contrast, breaking up the mass of the case and reinforcing the Vanguard collection’s automotive-inspired aesthetic.
Entirely set by hand with 28.4 carats of baguette-cut rubies, the case delivers exceptional brilliance. Each stone is secured using Franck Muller’s signature invisible setting technique, which conceals the prongs and allows the rubies to shine without interruption, creating an uninterrupted surface of light.

The crown is another point where design and function converge. A dual-position crown allows for both winding the mainsprings and setting the time. In this ruby execution, it is further embellished with gemstones—either as a cabochon or pavé—extending the jeweled theme throughout the watch.
The undisputed centerpiece of the watch is the triple-axis tourbillon positioned in the lower half of the dial. While most tourbillons rotate on a single axis, and only a handful operate on two, the Revolution 3 features three independent carriages, each rotating at a different speed. The innermost carriage completes one rotation every 60 seconds, the intermediate carriage every eight minutes, and the outer carriage once per hour. Unlike traditional tourbillons, which primarily compensate for gravitational effects in vertical positions, this sophisticated mechanism enhances precision across all orientations.
Powering this exceptional timepiece is the in-house MVT FM 2030-SMR-VS skeletonised movement, meticulously assembled from 461 individual components. Open-worked bridges and vivid accents reveal the complexity of the architecture, while the balance wheel beats at a frequency of 18,000 vibrations per hour (2.5 Hz). This slower frequency is often favoured in large tourbillons, as it reduces mechanical stress and offers a more visually expressive oscillation.
A 10-day power reserve, delivered by twin barrels, ensures sustained performance. A power reserve indicator is positioned at 12 o’clock, providing a practical counterpoint to the spectacle below.
The dial also incorporates two retrograde displays at 3 and 9 o’clock. Rather than indicating time, these scales track the progression of the tourbillon carriages, with hands sweeping across their arcs before snapping back to zero. This kinetic detail adds yet another layer of animation, ensuring constant visual activity across the dial. Time is displayed via off-centred, skeletonised hands that appear to float above the barrel bridge. Tipped with luminous material and subtly coordinated with the ruby theme, they maintain legibility against the dark mechanical backdrop.
The watch is paired with an integrated black alligator leather strap, secured to the case via hidden screws for a seamless transition. It is fastened by an 18k white gold buckle with rhodium plating, also set with rubies, echoing the lavish treatment of the case.
This unique creation is available exclusively through Franck Muller’s partnership with Cortina Watch, offered at the new flagship boutique. Price upon request.
