Two Distinct Dials on a Watch Inspired by the NH299 Series
Launched in 2022, the Citizen Tsuyosa collection quickly established itself as a defining entry point into the brand’s mechanical offerings. Named after the Japanese word for “strength,” Tsuyosa draws its design language from late-1990s Citizen models, particularly the NH299 series, which marked a shift toward more robust construction designs.
Originally introduced with a 40mm case, the collection later expanded to include a 37mm variant aimed at broader wrist sizes and style preferences. This smaller version debuted in a range of vibrant dial colors and was the subject of a previous article where we explored its design evolution. In its latest development, Citizen has announced the addition of two new 37mm models to the Tsuyosa lineup, each offered in a distinct dial color—further enriching the collection’s growing appeal and versatility.
The Tsuyosa features a 37mm stainless steel case with a well-balanced profile, measuring 11.5mm in thickness. Its surfaces alternate between polished and brushed finishes, offering a subtle interplay of texture and light. A hallmark of the design is the crown positioned at 4 o’clock, enhancing wrist comfort while maintaining the clean lines of the case. The flat sapphire crystal includes a date magnifier for improved legibility, and a see-through caseback reveals the automatic movement inside. and it offers 50 meters of water resistance.
The dials are the focal point of this release, marking the most significant update to the Tsuyosa 37mm lineup. Available in two striking new colors—blue or purple—each dial features a sunray-brushed finish that captures and reflects light with dynamic effect. Applied indices and hands are treated with luminescent material to ensure visibility in low light, while a clean white minutes track is printed around the periphery for precise time reading. A date window is positioned at 3 o’clock, maintaining the collection’s functional and balanced aesthetic.
The watch is powered by Citizen’s in-house Caliber 8210, an automatic mechanical movement. Operating at a frequency of 21,600 vph (3Hz), this reliable caliber offers a power reserve of approximately 42 hours. It features hacking seconds for precise time-setting, balancing dependable performance.
