Inspired by one of Hokusai’s “Tago Bay” prints
Chopard once again bridges cultures with the L.U.C XP Urushi Ukiyo-e, a creation that unites Swiss precision and Japanese artistry in a single masterpiece. Limited to just eight pieces, this refined timepiece pays homage to Mount Fuji, the sacred icon immortalized by Katsushika Hokusai, one of Japan’s most celebrated woodblock print masters.
The dial draws inspiration from Hokusai’s Tago Bay, one of the prints from his legendary series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji. In this composition, Mount Fuji rises serenely in the distance while fishermen and boats bring life to the waters below. Chopard’s artisans ensured the mountain remains untouched by the motion of the hands, preserving its tranquility as a space of pure contemplation.
Each dial is handcrafted in Japan by master lacquerer Minori Koizumi from Yamada Heiando, a century-old company and official supplier to the Japanese imperial family. Using ancestral Urushi lacquer, a natural resin drawn from the “lacquer tree”, and the traditional maki-e technique of sprinkling fine gold powder onto layers of lacquer, the artist achieves luminous depth and intricate texture. The result is a miniature painting of remarkable finesse, expressing over 1,500 years of Japanese artistic heritage. Time is read through gilded Dauphine-style hands.
The watch features a 40 mm case in 18-carat ethical yellow gold with a slim 8.28 mm profile. Its polished bezel contrasts with satin-brushed sides, while a glare-proof sapphire crystal protects the dial. The see-through sapphire caseback reveals the meticulously finished movement within. Water resistance is rated at 30 meters.
It is powered by Calibre L.U.C 96.41-L, an automatic movement derived from Chopard Manufacture’s first in-house calibre introduced in 1996. Measuring just 3.30 mm thick, it features a 22-carat gold micro-rotor and Chopard Twin technology, which pairs two stacked barrels to deliver a 65-hour power reserve. Finishing details include Côtes de Genève on the bridges and the Poinçon de Genève hallmark, attesting to its exceptional level of craftsmanship.
The timepiece is paired with a hand-sewn blue alligator leather strap featuring ecru stitching and a pin buckle in 18-carat ethical yellow gold. The L.U.C XP Urushi Ukiyo-e is limited to only eight pieces and is priced at EUR 40,700 (approximately AED 162,700).
