Reimagining a 1970s military watch built for U.S. special forces
Benrus, the iconic American watch brand, begins an exciting new chapter this year, introducing fresh iterations of its legendary tool watches alongside bold, modern reinterpretations, such as the Series 3061 GT, famously worn by Steve McQueen in Bullitt.
Now, Benrus turns to another iconic model from its archives, unveiling a modern evolution of a true military legend. The new Benrus Type 1 M1 makes its official debut at the Windup Watch Fair in Chicago. Inspired by the original Type 1 MIL-SPEC issued to U.S. elite forces in the 1970s, this latest version reimagines the classic design while pushing the boundaries of MIL-SPEC aesthetics.
It features a satin-finished stainless steel case, a champagne dial, and, departing from the no-logo original, a prominent BENRUS signature on the dial.
The Type 1 M1 maintains the uncompromising functionality of the original MIL-SPEC model, now enhanced with premium materials and an upgraded movement.
The case, crafted in satin-brushed stainless steel with polished bevels, strikes a balance between ruggedness and refinement. Measuring 41.5 mm in diameter and 13.7 mm in height, it features a unidirectional rotating bezel with a brushed steel finish, complemented by a black ceramic inner ring and a 60-minute diving scale with beige numerals. Sapphire crystals on both the front and back ensure durability and clarity, while a screw-down crown secures 200 meters of water resistance.
In a significant aesthetic shift, the dial comes in beige, marking a departure from the original black design. This choice modernizes the look while honoring the watch’s military roots. Large indices and bold hands, all filled with BW G9 Super-LumiNova, ensure outstanding legibility in all lighting conditions. As a time-only watch, the emphasis on clarity and readability is central to the design.
A notable update to the Type 1 M1 is its open sapphire caseback, a first for the series. It reveals the Swiss-made automatic ETA 2892 movement inside, beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz) and offering a power reserve of approximately 42 hours.
Completing the military-inspired aesthetic is a beige fabric strap lightweight, comfortable, and secured with a stainless steel pin buckle.
The Benrus Type 1 M1 is not a limited edition. It is priced at USD 1,900, approximately AED 6,980.
