The Diving Watch Returns with a Titanium Case and a Bi-Color Ceramic Bezel
Continuing its long-standing philosophy of robust, purpose-built utility watches, Ball Watch Company introduces the new Roadmaster Marine GMT. Featuring a striking black and yellow ceramic bezel and the option of an exotic meteorite dial, this latest release reaffirms the brand’s commitment to uncompromising performance. Engineered to withstand the pressures of the deep ocean, the shocks of rugged terrain, and the magnetic fields encountered during modern travel, the Roadmaster Marine GMT combines advanced materials—including Grade 5 titanium, scratch-resistant ceramic, and self-powered micro gas tubes—into a timepiece designed for the practical demands of the global traveler, while maintaining an assertive and technically refined aesthetic.
The immediate visual impact of the Roadmaster Marine GMT is defined by its bold use of color and high-contrast materials, most notably in the new black and yellow execution. The bi-directional rotating bezel features a split-color ceramic insert that is both vibrant and highly functional, allowing for instant differentiation between day and night hours when tracking a second or third time zone. The yellow segment is piercingly bright, ensuring rapid legibility, while the ceramic construction offers exceptional resistance to scratches and wear.
Encasing this rugged exterior is a titanium case, available in both 40mm and 42mm diameters. The predominantly brushed finish reinforces the tool-watch character while effectively concealing the minor scuffs that inevitably accumulate on a well-traveled instrument. The contrast between the matte gray titanium and the glossy, almost liquid appearance of the ceramic bezel creates a contemporary industrial aesthetic. Water resistance further underscores the “Marine” designation, with the watch rated to an impressive 300 meters.
Time zone navigation is a defining strength of the Roadmaster Marine GMT, facilitated by a patented quick-set mechanism that is both intuitive and innovative. Rather than relying on traditional crown adjustments, the GMT hand is controlled via two dedicated push-buttons positioned at 8 and 10 o’clock on the left side of the case. The lower button moves the GMT hand backward in one-hour increments, while the upper button advances it forward. This system allows rapid adjustments without interrupting the main time display or stopping the seconds hand. In practice, the GMT hand can be set to local destination time, while the primary hands continue to indicate home time. When combined with the bi-directional 24-hour bezel, the watch enables the tracking of a third time zone, offering a comprehensive solution for frequent travelers.
Among the most technically compelling options in the collection is the Gibeon meteorite dial, which incorporates a literal fragment of outer space into the watch’s architecture. This rare material originates from a prehistoric asteroid that exploded before falling to Earth, eventually landing in what is now Namibia.
The dial reveals the iconic Widmanstätten patterns—intricate, intersecting crystalline structures formed by iron and nickel alloys as the asteroid cooled over millions of years in the vacuum of space. These patterns are impossible to replicate artificially, ensuring that each meteorite dial is entirely unique. The raw, geometric complexity of the meteorite surface creates a striking contrast with the precisely engineered indices and hands, establishing a compelling dialogue between natural chaos and human precision.
For those who prefer a more understated aesthetic, the Roadmaster Marine GMT is also available with deep black or blue dials that prioritize clarity and contrast. Designed with legibility as the primary directive, these versions feature large applied indices and bold Arabic numerals at the cardinal points. The matte dial finish minimizes reflections and glare, ensuring instant readability in all conditions. A day and date display is positioned at three o’clock—an uncommon but highly practical inclusion on a GMT watch—seamlessly integrated into the dial layout without disrupting visual balance.
A signature technology that distinguishes this timepiece from most mechanical watches is Ball’s use of micro gas tubes for luminosity. Unlike conventional Super-LumiNova, which requires external charging and fades over time, these glass tubes are filled with tritium gas that emits a constant, self-powered glow for up to 25 years. The tubes are embedded into the hour markers and mounted directly on the hands, guaranteeing visibility in complete darkness. This model features enlarged tubes for enhanced brightness, including an extended tube on the GMT hand and a newly added tube on the seconds hand, allowing the wearer to confirm operation even in pitch-black environments. The sharp, controlled glow—typically green or yellow—remains stable throughout the night, making it particularly suited to night diving or low-light exploration.
Powering the Roadmaster Marine GMT is the automatic Caliber BALL RR1203-C, a movement certified by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute COSC. This certification ensures chronometer-grade accuracy within a strict tolerance of -4 to +6 seconds per day. Beyond its precision credentials, the movement incorporates a proprietary module that enables the watch’s advanced GMT functionality. The caliber is visible through a sapphire crystal case back, offering a view of the mechanical heart within.
To protect the movement, Ball employs its patented Amortiser anti-shock system, designed to absorb impact energy and safeguard the escapement. This allows the watch to withstand shocks of up to 5,000Gs—forces that would incapacitate most mechanical timepieces. Additionally, the case provides anti-magnetic protection up to 4,800 A/m, shielding the movement from magnetic fields generated by airport security scanners, cockpit instruments, and everyday electronic devices. This comprehensive protection ensures consistent chronometer performance, even under the demanding conditions of modern travel.
The Roadmaster Marine GMT is fitted with a bracelet crafted from a combination of titanium and stainless steel. This bi-metal construction balances the lightweight comfort of titanium with the strength and durability of steel in high-stress components. The folding clasp is robust and secure, engineered to remain firmly closed during vigorous activity while remaining easy to operate, even with gloved hands.
