The dial’s grey tone draws inspiration from the rocky shores of southern Britain
The new Perpetual Moon 41.5 Cliff Grey Edition features a dial in the same muted tone as the cliffs of Cornwall, a tribute to the birthplace of Arnold & Son’s founder and the historic port of departure for His Majesty’s ships, outfitted with marine chronometers crafted by John Arnold. Dominating the dial is the collection’s signature oversized moon, a symbol of celestial navigation, set against a night sky shimmering with the constellations of Ursa Major and Cassiopeia.
Housed in a red gold case measuring 41.5 mm in diameter and 11.30 mm in height, the Perpetual Moon exemplifies Arnold & Son’s expertise in fine watchmaking and sculptural artistry. A sapphire crystal protects both sides of the case, while a slender bezel maximizes the visibility of the dial. The crown and pusher, positioned on the right side, enable manual winding and time-setting. The case is water-resistant to 30 meters.
The dial of the Perpetual Moon 41.5 Red Gold Cliff Grey edition is adorned with the brand’s exclusive Stellar Rays finish, a distinctive decorative motif characterized by alternating depths and widths of engraved rays. This arrangement creates a dynamic rhythm of light and shadow, further amplified by successive layers of transparent lacquer. Limited to just 28 pieces, this edition's Cliff Grey tone pays homage to the British coastline and its misty, windswept cliffs.
The moonphase display is a highlight of the timepiece. The moon, realistically depicted with hand-painted shadows, is crafted from mother-of-pearl and coated with Super-LumiNova. It is set against a textured, grained backdrop treated with blue PVD, heightening its ethereal allure. As is customary for the Perpetual Moon collection, the moon is accompanied by the constellations of Ursa Major and Cassiopeia, both meticulously hand-painted and enhanced with luminescent details. This celestial scene evokes the heritage of John Arnold, whose marine chronometers once guided sailors across the globe.
Powering the Perpetual Moon 41.5 Red Gold is the manually wound A&S1512 calibre, an in-house movement offering a 90-hour power reserve from two barrels. Operating at a frequency of 3 Hz. The movement’s finishing includes a rhodium-plated mainplate with circular graining, chamfered bridges adorned with radiating Côtes de Genève, and other meticulous details.
The case back features a secondary moon phase display, allowing precise adjustments to the moon age. The lunar cycle’s duration 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes, and 2.8 seconds, is faithfully represented, with the movement requiring 122 years to accumulate a mere 24-hour discrepancy if consistently wound.
It comes with a grey alligator leather strap, hand-stitched and secured with an 18-carat 5N red gold pin buckle. Limited to 28 pieces, it is priced at CHF 37,000, approximately AED 168,700.
